Description Sign Shop The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player to fill a vacant Signal Technician Level I position in our Public Works/Traffic Sign Shop. This member of the Sign Shop team must be able to work during adverse weather conditions (hot/cold/rain/snow), and will be on call for emergency barricade duties and special events on a rotating schedule. The position is required to work during snow events.

Class B CDL is required within twelve (12) months of hire. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 2-3 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Examples of Duties SUMMARY Performs skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following depending on the area of assignment. Other duties may be assigned. Operates street sweeper, excavator, bulldozer, front-end loader and other medium to heavy equipment Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding Operates cranes, large motor grader in leveling ground surfaces, street and construction repairs Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a closed-circuit television unit designed for stormwater infrastructure inspections.

Gather and report work site information from inspections Performs tasks such as pesticide application and asphalt leveling Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment Operates all equipment, both light and heavy in snow removal Paints walls and materials from surface preparation to application and finishing Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items Uses and maintains spray painting and lawn care equipment for maintaining athletic fields When not operating equipment, performs general laboring tasks such collecting and removing trash and debris from city properties Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed May be responsible for fabrication, maintenance, and installation of traffic control, pavement markings and barricade signage according to City guidelines and uniformity. May require some experience and knowledge of computer graphic software and equipment used for fabrication and installation of signs and markings. May supervise crew in absence of supervisor May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties Sign Shop Performs preventive maintenance on signal-related equipment, as well as cleaning, adjusting, and testing equipment.

Installs and repairs traffic signals, controllers, Opticom and signal video detections, school zone flashers, and all of the City-owned street lights and other electrical and electronic equipment Assists with the installation of messenger cable, hangs overhead lights and other devices Installs and repairs various vehicle detectors Replaces electronic components Designs and makes various test equipment used in debugging systems Installs and maintains aerial and underground traffic signals and communication cables Maintains standby status on rotation, makes emergency repairs to equipment after-hours Keeps records of work and makes reports Recommends and/or makes modifications to electronic and other signal and communication equipment under direct supervision Installs and maintains automated traffic signal control equipment and systems Maintains and repairs school zone flasher systems Maintains and repairs all City-owned street and bridge lights Locates underground utility/ signal wires per UA 811 code Participates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations and installation of Christmas decorations Any other task above and beyond as deemed necessary by the Supervisor SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES May supervise a small crew. May supervise crew in the absence of Maintenance Technician III or Maintenance Technician IV. Typical Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Sign Shop -A High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required, and technical training in electrical and electronics is preferred.

- Ability to understand electrical circuits and have basic electrical knowledge. Prior Traffic Signal Operation knowledge is preferred but not required. -A valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia is required.

-Must have a CDL Class B or obtain within six months of employment. -Must possess or obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Level I certification within two years of employment. -Ability to perform repairs, installation, etc., from bucket truck at heights of up to 40 ft

is required -The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. -Ability to meet consistent attendance. -Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

-Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face and work as a team -Skill to use a personal computer and various software packages EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in the trades area assigned; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Supplemental Information LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and/or a valid appropriate Class A, B or C commercial driver's license with specific endorsements depending on departmental requirements.

May require Pesticide Registered Technician Certification.
