Job description

This position is responsible for the construction, installation and maintenance of traffic signs. An incumbent in this position may be designated "Senior Sign Technician." This job is a safety sensitive position that will require a pre-employment drug test and subsequent random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with Barrow County Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace. Maintains and repairs traffic signs; inspects traffic signs to identify damage and ensure readability; repairs, straightens, or replaces bent or damaged signs or sign posts; clears and removes vegetation; cleans signs

Logs and maintains records of new or replaced road signs. Trims and clears brush around signs. Maintains equipment and supply inventory; makes purchases as needed.

Flags traffic at work sites; installs traffic control devices. Ensures that work activities are conducted in compliance with applicable traffic control device regulations, standards and specifications; initiates actions to correct deviations. Operates a variety of machinery, equipment and tools associated with work projects.

Maintains vehicles, tools and equipment. Operates a vehicle to transport equipment, tools and personnel to and from work sites. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED.

One to two years of related experience. Valid Driver's license. Physical Requirements: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending or crouching.

The employee frequently lifts light or occasionally heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. The work is performed in a sign shop outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.

Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc. Knowledge & Skills: Knowledge of the principles and practices of street sign construction, installation, repair and maintenance. Knowledge of safe work practices.

Knowledge of vehicle and equipment operation and maintenance. Skill in the operation of a variety of job-related equipment. Skill in the installation and maintenance of road signs.

Skill in flagging traffic and in establishing safe work zones. Skill in interpersonal relations.
