What is a sign-on bonus?

A sign-on bonus is a financial incentive offered by employers to new employees when they accept a job offer. This bonus is typically paid out as a lump sum or in installments shortly after the employee starts working. The purpose of a sign-on bonus is to attract top talent, encourage candidates to accept job offers quickly, or compensate for benefits or bonuses left behind at a previous job. In some cases, employees may have to repay the bonus if they leave the company within a certain period, as outlined in their employment contract.

A sign-on bonus is a one-time payment offered to new employees as an incentive to join a company, often to attract highly qualified candidates or fill roles with urgent needs. While it can be a valuable addition to your initial compensation, it's important to review the terms—such as repayment clauses if you leave the job within a certain period—and consider how it fits with your base salary, benefits, and long-term earning potential. Applicants should also understand that a sign-on bonus is usually separate from regular bonuses or raises and often does not repeat in following years.
