Power System Modeling, Control and Optimization - Internship
Are you interested in developing new power system simulation and optimization tools for real industrial AI datacenter applications? Here's the right internship opportunity for you!
Join our research group, Autonomous Controls and Operations, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3-6 month internship, and contribute to the development of AI datacenter power systems simulation studies. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial applications. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research. An internship with Siemens Technology is a great opportunity for students to gain real-world experience in a diverse work environment.
In this role, you will work on-site in Princeton, NJ.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to industrial research projects on power system simulation and analysis for AI datacenter applications
  • Develop, implement, and validate power systems and power electronics models using Matlab/Simulink, PSCAD, and PSSE for steady-state and dynamic studies
  • Perform electromagnetic transient (EMT) and RMS simulations to support power system design and stability analysis
  • Develop Python-based automation scripts and post-processing tools to support simulation workflows and results analysis
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the asset performance library
  • Collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in the fields of power systems, control, and optimization across Siemens research and business units

Basic Qualifications:
  • A current or recently graduated MS or PhD student pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field
  • Strong hands-on experience with Matlab/Simulink for power system modeling, simulation, and control design
  • Proficiency in PSCAD for electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of AC/DC power systems
  • Experience with PSSE (PSS®E) for power flow, dynamic simulation, and network analysis studies
  • Solid programming proficiency in Python - including experience writing clean, modular, reusable code and working with scientific computing libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, and pandas
  • Foundational knowledge of power systems - including AC/DC circuit analysis, load flow concepts, power system stability, and basic generator operation principles
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Practical experience conducting power system studies such as load flow, short circuit, transient stability, and dynamic analysis using industry-standard tools
  • Experience integrating simulation tools (PSCAD, PSSE, Matlab/Simulink) with Python for automated workflows and batch simulations
  • Familiarity with microgrid design, islanded power system operation, or datacenter power infrastructure
  • Experience with software development best practices: version control (Git), unit testing (pytest), and technical documentation
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts across power engineering, software development, and data science

The pay range for this position is $33-47 per hour. The actual wage offered may be lower or higher depending on budget and candidate experience, knowledge, skills, qualifications and premium geographic location.
