A Shotcrete job involves the application of concrete or mortar using a high-pressure hose to create strong, durable structures. Shotcrete is commonly used in tunnels, swimming pools, retaining walls, and other construction projects requiring high strength and precision. Workers in this field must be skilled in handling equipment, mixing materials, and ensuring proper application for structural integrity. The job may involve working in challenging environments and requires knowledge of safety protocols. Shotcrete can be applied using either the dry-mix or wet-mix method, depending on project requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities and challenges of a shotcrete?

In a Shotcrete position, your day-to-day tasks often include preparing surfaces for application, setting up and operating spraying equipment, mixing shotcrete materials to precise specifications, and monitoring the final finish for quality control. You'll frequently collaborate with other construction professionals to coordinate project timelines and site safety. Physical stamina and attention to detail are crucial, as the work can be physically demanding and requires accuracy in challenging conditions or confined spaces. Adapting to changing job site environments and troubleshooting equipment issues are common challenges, but these experiences also provide valuable learning and skill-building opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a shotcrete?

To thrive in Shotcrete, you need strong knowledge of concrete application techniques, construction safety, and the physical stamina for demanding tasks, usually backed by on-the-job training or relevant certifications. THE COMPANY:

Schnabel is a nationally recognized specialty contractor with over 65 years of experience in geostructural design-build and underground construction. With a portfolio of thousands of successful projects across the country, we are known for delivering smart, safe, and cost-effective solutions to complex engineering challenges. We specialize in advanced earth retention systems and other innovative geostructural techniques that create stable, lasting foundations for buildings, infrastructure, and other critical structures. At Schnabel, we combine technical expertise with a hands-on approach to ensure every project starts on solid ground.

ROLE:

Schnabel is seeking a Shotcrete/Nozzleman Laborer to assist with the construction of specialty underground structures and earth retention systems. The primary responsibility of this role is the placement of shotcrete using wet or dry process application methods to support excavation and stabilization projects. This position works closely with crews installing earth retention systems and other geotechnical construction elements.

Our typical scope of work includes installation of piles, lagging, walers, tiebacks, and braces for support of excavation projects. We also take on challenging projects involving underpinning, grouting, tunneling, soil stabilization, and other specialty geostructural construction techniques. Candidates who have direct construction experience and familiarity with our company’s traditional scope of work are preferred.

RESPONSOBILITIES:

  • Operate shotcrete nozzle equipment to place concrete safely and efficiently.
  • Assist with setup, operation and maintenance of shotcrete pumps, hoses, compressors and related equipment.
  • Prepare and clean work areas before, during, and after shotcrete operations.
  • Apply shotcrete to engineered specifications while maintaining proper thickness, coverage, and finish quality.
  • Monitor shotcrete placement and communicate with pump operators and crew members to ensure consistent material flow and quality.
  • Inspect shotcrete work quality, alignment, and adherence to project specifications.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of shotcrete equipment and tools.
  • Follow all project safety requirements and participate in daily safety meetings

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 2 years of documented construction experience, preferably involving shotcrete, concrete placement, earth retention, or underground construction.
  • Experience operating shotcrete nozzle equipment is preferred
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and project specifications.
  • ACI Shotcrete Nozzleman Certification is preferred but not required.
  • Focus, stand, walk, kneel, climb, bend, and work from heights or within confined spaces during assigned shifts
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug test.
  • Local and regional travel as required for projects.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds of materials over rough terrain.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Driver’s license, reliable transportation, and a safe driving record.
  • Follow all safety procedures, use proper protective equipment, and help maintain a safe job site by identifying and reporting potential hazards.

SAFETY:

Support the company’s safety and risk management objectives by adhering to established procedures, proactively identifying and addressing potential risks, and contributing to the achievement of safety goals through the use of metrics and continuous improvement efforts.

Don’t hurt yourself, don’t hurt anyone else, and don’t let anyone hurt you; a simple philosophy that has been adopted at Schnabel. We live by this belief to provide a safe and healthy workplace for all our employees and subcontractors.

Pay will be based on local union wage scales.

Schnabel is a union contractor and as such, your benefits are made available based on your union affiliation. Through hard work and reliability there will be opportunities to advance within the company.
