Palmetto Bluff is nestled along the May River in the Lowcountry of South Carolina between Hilton Head Island and Savannah. As an award winning 20,000 acre development, the development encompasses a private member’s only club which includes a marina, restaurants, an equestrian center, a shooting club, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, The Crossroads Reversable King Collins Golf Course, Anson Point Golf Course designed by Coore and Crenshaw, a lawn and racquet club, a community farm, and more. In addition, Palmetto Bluff has an extensive nature preserve, walking trails, retail shopping, art gallery, and a vibrant village, all which pay homage to the region’s rich heritage.

Job Summary:

The Intern reports directly to the Head and Assistant Golf Course Superintendent. Under the Golf Course Superintendents supervision, the Golf Course Maintenance Intern will assist the team in maintaining and improving the golf course’s overall appearance, playability, and health. This role provides hand-on experience in turfgrass management, golf course construction, irrigation systems, equipment operation, and other aspects of golf course upkeep.

Essential Job Functions:

Job duties include, although are not limited to:

  • Mow greens, tees, fairways, and rough using specialized equipment
  • Perform tasks such as aeration, topdressing, fertilizing, and over-seeding
  • Assists with the operation, inspection, and repair of the irrigation system
  • Monitor soil moisture levels and ensure proper hydration of turf and plants
  • Set tee markers and hole locations based on daily play schedules
  • Maintain sand traps, bunkers, and cart paths for optimal playability
  • Identify and report pest infestations or turf diseases
  • Apply pesticides and herbicides under supervision, following safety guidelines
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on mowers, utility vehicles, and other equipment
  • Ensure equipment is stored properly and in good working condition
  • Prune trees and shrubs, and maintain landscape features
  • Remove debris and keep the course clean and visually appealing
  • Adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations
  • Assists with record-keeping and reporting of maintenance activities

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in a Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field
  • Basic knowledge of turfgrass care and maintenance practices is preferred
  • Willingness to learn and take direction from supervisors
  • Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and in varying weather conditions
  • Strong attention to details
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities
  • Passion for golf course management and outdoor work

Physical Requirements:

  • Most tasks are performed outdoors in variable weather conditions, including hot, cold, windy and rainy.
  • Temperatures can be extreme but are usually moderate.
  • Frequently works near moving/mechanical parts. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to reach with arms and hands, bend, and stoop, remain at post standing for periods of time, walk long distance, and is required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color and peripheral.
  • Due to the busy nature of the position, the associate must be able to routinely work well under pressure, remain calm, and be tactful with co-workers
