Job description

Maintenance Helper (Shipyard Night Shift) supports vessel maintenance and emergency response activities during overnight operations in an active shipyard environment. This role serves as the primary point of contact for Navy personnel when production crews are off-site, assisting with troubleshooting, minor repairs, and maintenance support aboard vessels as needed. Work is performed independently with minimal supervision in support of ongoing ship repair and maintenance projects. Assignments are project-based and may continue based on performance and contract demand, with the potential for long-term placement or permanent hire with select clients.


Responsibilities

  • Respond to maintenance-related issues and service requests from Navy personnel during overnight hours.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and temporary repairs aboard vessels to maintain operational readiness until daytime production crews return.
  • Conduct routine inspections of assigned areas and identify maintenance concerns requiring immediate attention.
  • Assist with general shipboard maintenance activities, including minor mechanical, structural, and facility-related repairs.
  • Communicate maintenance issues, repair status, and operational concerns to management and production personnel during shift turnover.
  • Maintain a safe and organized work environment while following all shipyard and customer safety requirements.
  • Support emergency response efforts related to shipboard equipment, systems, or facility issues during off-hours.

Requirements

  • Ability to work independently with very little supervision in a shipyard environment.
  • Previous experience in shipyard, industrial, marine, maintenance, or related trades environments.
  • Basic troubleshooting and repair skills involving mechanical, structural, or facility maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Navy personnel, supervisors, and production teams.
  • Must be able to obtain base access (DBIDS) as required by the military installation.
  • Ability to work overnight shifts, including weekends and extended schedules as required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, climb, bend, and work in physically demanding shipyard environments.
  • Must comply with all site safety requirements and PPE standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting Navy vessel repair or maintenance operations.
  • Familiarity with shipboard systems and marine maintenance environments.
  • OSHA 10 Maritime or similar safety training.
  • Experience performing maintenance support during off-hours or emergency response situations.

Additional Information

Work is performed aboard vessels, in dry docks, and in industrial shipyard environments supporting Navy and commercial repair operations. Duties may involve confined or elevated spaces and active production areas. Exposure to industrial noise, energized systems, dust, fumes, and environmental conditions is expected; respiratory protection may be required based on task or location. PPE is required in accordance with site safety policies. Work schedules may include overtime, nights, weekends, and variable shifts based on production needs. Reliable transportation is required to report to assigned shipyard or project locations.
