What is a Ship Designer job?

A Ship Designer is responsible for creating plans and designs for various types of ships, including commercial vessels, naval ships, and recreational boats. They use engineering principles, CAD software, and industry regulations to develop efficient, safe, and seaworthy vessels. Ship Designers collaborate with engineers, architects, and shipbuilders to ensure that the design meets client requirements, safety standards, and performance goals. Their work includes hull structure, propulsion systems, and overall vessel layout.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Ship Designer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Ship Designer, you need a robust knowledge of naval architecture, engineering principles, and 3D modeling, typically supported by a degree in marine engineering or naval architecture. Familiarity with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or Rhino), regulatory compliance standards, and design analysis tools is essential. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication skills set exceptional Ship Designers apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering safe, innovative, and cost-effective vessel designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

What does a typical day look like for a Ship Designer, and who do they work with?

A typical day for a Ship Designer involves collaborating closely with naval architects, engineers, and project managers to develop detailed vessel blueprints and specifications. You'll use CAD software to create and refine ship layouts, review technical requirements, and ensure compliance with safety and maritime regulations. Ship Designers frequently participate in team meetings, coordinate with suppliers or clients, and may occasionally visit shipyards to oversee the implementation of their designs. This role offers a dynamic blend of creative problem-solving, technical analysis, and collaborative teamwork, all within a fast-paced marine engineering environment.

Job description

CHAOS Industries is redefining modern defense with a multi-product portfolio that gives the ultimate advantage-domain dominance. The company's products are powered by Coherent Distributed Networks (CDN), empowering warfighters, commercial air operators, and border protection teams to act faster, adapt rapidly, and stay ahead of evolving threats.ย

CHAOS Industries was founded in 2022 and has raised a total of $1 billion in funding from leading investors, including 8VC, Accel, and Valor Equity Partners. The company is headquartered in Los Angeles, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, and London. For more information, please visit www.chaosinc.com.

Role Overview:ย

CHAOSย is seeking aย Lead Industrial Designerย to shape the physical and human-facing aspects of our next-generation dual-use systemsย -ย spanning mounted and dismounted sensor platforms, ground-based vehicles, and airborne effectors.ย

In this role, you will define and drive industrial design vision across hardware and user-facing systems, balancing real-world operational constraints with a cohesive product identity. You will work closely with hardware, software, and user interface teams to ensure our products are not onlyย high-performing, but intuitive, durable, and thoughtfully designed for the environments in which theyย operate.ย

This role sits at the intersection ofย industrial design, human factors, and product strategyย -ย bridgingย the gap between engineering-driven development and user-centered design.ย

The ideal candidate is a hands-on, build-and-ship designer (not purely studio-based), with experience designing ruggedized products for demanding environments such as military, aerospace, or industrial applications.ย ย ย

This is a full-time, on-site position in Los Angeles, CA, with ~20% travel for field testing and user interaction.ย

ย
Responsibilities:ย

  • Define and drive the industrial design vision across a portfolio of dual-use products, ensuring alignment with brand, usability, and mission requirementsย
  • Translate complex system requirements into intuitive physical form factors, layouts, and user interactionsย
  • Design for real-world use cases, including deployment, transport, setup, maintenance, and operation in austere environmentsย
  • Collaborate with hardware, software, and UI teams to ensure a cohesive end-to-end user experience across physical and digital interfacesย
  • Develop concepts, mockups, and prototypes (low- to high-fidelity) to rapidly iterate on form, ergonomics, and usabilityย
  • Guide trade studies between performance, size, usability, and visual design, helping the organization make intentional design decisionsย
  • Influence product architecture early to improve usability, serviceability, and operator efficiencyย
  • Ensure designs account for ruggedization, environmental exposure, and manufacturability, in collaboration with mechanical engineeringย
  • Provide design direction and critique across teams toย maintainย consistency and qualityย
  • Participate in field testing and user engagement, incorporating feedback from operators into iterative design improvementsย
  • Help evolve a design language that balances high-performance systems with a disciplined, mission-appropriate aestheticย

ย
What Success Looks Like:ย

  • Products that are easier to deploy,ย operate, andย maintainย in the fieldย
  • Clear, intentional tradeoffs between performance and usabilityย
  • A recognizable and consistent design languageย aligned with brand imageย
  • Strongย alignment between engineering, product vision, and user needsย
  • Designs that balance visual quality with mission appropriateness - modern without being ornamentalย

Minimumย Requirements:ย

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial Designย or related fieldย
  • 7+ years of experience in industrial design, with a focus on ruggedized, outdoor, or mission-critical productsย
  • Demonstrated experience taking products from concept through productionย
  • Strong portfolioย showcasingย shipped products (military, aerospace, industrial, automotive, or adjacent fields preferred)ย
  • Experience designing for real-world use - including ergonomics, human factors, and operational workflowsย
  • Ability to create and communicate design intent through sketches, renderings, prototypes, and storytellingย
  • Working knowledge of DFMA and manufacturing constraints, with the ability to collaborate effectively with mechanical engineersย and manufacturing process engineersย
  • Understanding of environmental and durability considerations (e.g., weather exposure, handling, transport, field use)ย
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering, product, and leadership teamsย
  • Ability to obtain andย maintainย a U.S. security clearanceย

Preferred Requirements:ย

  • Experience designing military or defense-adjacent systems, or products used in harsh environmentsย
  • Exposure to mounted/dismounted systems, sensor platforms, or vehicle-integrated productsย
  • Familiarity with human-machine interface design across both physical and digital systemsย
  • Experience working with rapid prototyping tools (3D printing, shop tools, etc.)ย
  • Proficiencyย with common design tools (e.g., CAD, Adobe Suite, Figma), without requiring deep CAD ownershipย
  • Experience conducting or supporting user research, field studies, or operator interviewsย
  • Experience designingย MIL-Spec productsย
  • Active U.S. security clearanceย

Why CHAOS?

  • Health Benefits: Medical, dental, and vision benefits 100% paid for by the company
  • Additional benefits: 401k (+ 50% company match up to 6% of pay), FSA, HSA, life insurance, and more
  • Our Perks: Free daily lunch, 'No meeting Fridays', unlimited PTO, casual dress code
