This position is covered by a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with SEIU-UHW. As part of the terms of employment, employees in this role are required to join the union within 31 days of hire and remain a member (e.g. dues paying, fee paying, religious exception contributor) for the duration of the collective bargaining agreement.
This position was originally posted to ratified SEIU members from 01/29/26 to 02/06/26 The position is now available to be filled by internal candidates that are not members of the ratified Bargaining Unit or External candidates to Sharp.
What You Will Do
Facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring the operating room environment is safe, that equipment is functioning properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A surgical technologist that applies clinical expertise in the roles of scrub surgical technologist.
Required Qualifications
  • 3 Years Experience as a surgical technologist in a hospital setting.
  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED
  • Certified Surgical Technologists (CST) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR NBSTSA Certified Surgical First Assistants (CSFA) - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) OR Tech in Surgery - Certified (NCCT), TS-C (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing -REQUIRED

Other Qualification Requirements
  • Surgical Technologist Certification from an accredited program is required (e.g. Certified Surgical Technologists (CST), or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA), or Tech in Surgery-Certified (NCCT)).

Essential Functions
  • Clinical practice
    Accountable for instrument trays to match the instrument list provided in the tray. Need to escalate when incomplete.
    Update surgeon's preference card per entity specific process.
    Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure.
    Scrubs, gowns and gloves.
    Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medication/solutions needed for procedure.
    Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to operation and before incision is closed.
    Complies with all count policies and procedure.
    Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
    Helps in draping sterile field.
    Passes instruments etc. to surgeon during procedure.
    Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedure.
    Cleans and prepares instruments for decontamination when needed.
    Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.
    Assists in prepping room for the next patient when needed.
  • Problem resolution
    Identifies any deviation from expected procedure/policy.
    Reports any patient safety issues.
    Identities problems and takes appropriate action, without prompting to accomplish department objectives and improved quality of care.
    Participates in teaching.
    Role models the Sharp Experience.
    An active team member (i.e. works additional shifts or different shifts as appropriate).
  • Professional development
    Is an expert in the performance and demonstrated mentorship in at least 2 specialties(i.e. spine, total joint, cardiac) and/or mentors and performs in at least 1 specialty.
    Builds relationships with clinical staff, physicians, and other healthcare team members to facilitate patient and organizational outcomes.
    Participates in professionals organization.
    Enhances own professional growth through self-evaluation and setting and meeting own developmental goals.
    Serves as a preceptor for new surgical technologists and/or student surgical technologists.
    Exhibits the characteristics of moral integrity, honesty, surgical conscience and a commitment to upholding the highest principles of patient safety in the operating room.
    Promote and contribute to the enhancement of quality care for the surgical patient.
  • Quality care
    Demonstrates knowledge of procedure by anticipating needs prior and during each case (i.e. assists with dressing and/or cast application at the end of the procedure).
    Picks cases using physician preference card.
    Consistently fulfills commitments for additional responsibilities.
    Does not require direction to fulfill responsibility.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • A clinical expert in theory and the application of sterile and aseptic technique.
  • An expert in performance and demonstrated mentorship in at least 2 specialties and/or mentors and performs in at least 1 specialty.

  • Rehires/Reinstates that are rejoining the organization less than 12 months from last date of employment with Sharp Healthcare

To remain eligible for your sign on incentive the following criteria must be met:
  • Must remain in original hired FTE status and shift (if specified in offer letter)
  • Must remain in original department/specialty.
  • Must remain in original Job Title
  • Transfers to a non-bonus eligible department or position may result in forfeiting remaining incentive bonus.
