Under direction of a Physician or Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting surgeons, anesthetists, and nurses in the care of patients in the Operating Room.

Essential Duties:

  • This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Associates may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.

    • Maintain knowledgeand practice of aseptic technique.
    • Assists thecirculating nurse in the preparation of surgical procedures and during room turnovers between procedures.
    • Prepares sterilefield for surgical procedures, ensuring proper instruments and supplies are available for use.
    • During thesurgical procedure:

      • Anticipation ofneeds for surgeon and passing of instruments and supplies;
      • Functions as assistant, when needed;
      • Obtains countswith circulating nurse;
      • Cares forspecimens according to procedure;
      • Maintains propercare of instruments and supplies when procedure is finished.


    • Maintainsequipment, supplies and environmental safety.
    • Maintainsknowledge of current trends in surgical procedures and instrumentation.
    • Maintainsstandards by participating in in-services, committees, etc.
    • Decontaminatingand preparation for sterilization of instruments utilized during surgical cases
    • Maintains a cleanand safe work environment.
