JOB TITLE: AmeriCorps Workerย 

JOB TYPE: Part-time; Temporaryย 

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Sunset Park High Schoolย 

EXEMPTION: Non-exemptย 

REPORTS TO: Program Directorย 

SUPERVISORY ROLE: Noย 


COMPENSATION RATE: Bi-weekly living allowance of $750.00

EDUCATIONAL AWARD: $2,817.14; received upon completion of the programย 

WEEKLY HOURS: 18-20 hoursย 


POSITION SUMMARY

CENTER FOR FAMILY LIFE, a nationally recognized social service program in Sunset Park Brooklyn, is seeking enthusiastic individuals to serve as AmeriCorps Workers to support youth engagement programs and promote student leadership development and career readiness. AmeriCorps members will work collaboratively with staff and will gain experience in working with youth ages 14-21 and learn about the social work group model. Our ideal candidate has knowledge and a demonstrated interest in working with youth and will utilize a strengths-based approach to enrich the lives of youth, families and community.

ย I. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to ย 

  • Supervise students in a variety of activities and clubs focused on arts, homework assistance and enrichment, team building and leadership developmentย 
  • Co-facilitate afterschool clubs with CFL staff membersย ย 
  • Partner with SPHS teachers to co-facilitate school day advisory classes twice per weekย 
  • Attend trainings relating to social group work and team meetingsย ย 
  • Assist in the design and implementation of special events for high school students, families and the communityย like Road to College Night, Winter Wonderland, Spring/Fall Fest, SYEP Job Fair, etcย 
  • Support with supervision of annual spring show preparation and performancesย ย 
  • Plan and coordinate field trips for studentsย 
  • Co-facilitate weekly groups and provide individual mentoring sessions for students to discuss their academic progress and/or college researchย 
  • Perform office duties as necessary (light data entry, filing, copying, answering phones)ย 
  • Assist youth with the SYEP process including the application process, enrollment and orientationsย 
  • May require working evenings and weekendsย 

ย II. QUALIFICATIONS ย 

  • Some college experience preferredย ย ย 
  • Experience working with youth on leadership development, service learning, and/or college explorationย ย ย 
  • Must enjoy working with high school students, working in groups, collaborating with others, and being part of a communityย ย ย 
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish or English/Chinese, a plusย ย 
  • 3 references required (2 must be professional)ย 

In addition, employees need to possess the following characteristics:ย ย ย 

  • Detail-oriented, flexible and be a team playerย ย 
  • Must have a sensitivity to cultural differences present among staff and studentsย 
  • Must possess a strong belief in people's ability to grow and change; forge a mutually respectful partnership with persons served and their familiesย ย 
  • Must have the ability to set limits and to intervene appropriately; always maintains helping role of practitionerย 

III. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERSย 

  • Must enjoy working with high school students, working in groups, collaborating with others, and being part of a communityย 
  • Build and maintain close, daily interactions with participants, coworkers, and supervisorsย 
  • Have a strong sensitivity to cultural differences present among staff and clients within our organizationย 
  • Possess a strong belief in young people's ability to grow and changeย 
  • Has a flexible personality, ready to switch tasks when askedย 

IV. WORKING CONDITIONSย 

  • All AmeriCorps members will be working onsite at Sunset Park High Schoolย 
  • Actively engage and interact with students each dayย 
  • May be required to be active by walking, bending, standing, squatting or sitting on the floor with studentsย 
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high energy level ย ย ย 

WORK SCHEDULE

2026-27 School Year [October- June]

Between the hours of 10 AM- 6 PM

Monday through Friday

May require working evenings and weekends

Work schedule to be further discussed with supervisor upon hire; hours are flexible
