What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a service designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Service Designer, you need expertise in user-centered design, journey mapping, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field. Proficiency with tools like Sketch, Figma, Miro, and experience with prototyping and research methodologies are highly valued. Strong collaboration, communication, and facilitation skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for creating seamless, impactful service experiences that effectively address user and business needs.

What is a service designer?

A service designer researches customer behavior and common customer responses to particular experiences, then creates new processes to improve observed issues. Service design is similar to product or industrial design in manufacturing or user experience (UX) in the software industry. However, the focal point is customer service experiences — both online and in-person. As a service designer, your job duties include observing customers at various touch points throughout the service experience, identifying problem areas through key performance indicators, and proposing changes and improvements to the service experience.

Service Designers work closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and business analysts, to ensure that service solutions are user-centered and feasible. Throughout a project, they facilitate workshops, gather user insights, and co-create service blueprints with stakeholders from various departments. Effective collaboration is essential, as Service Designers often act as a bridge between user needs and organizational goals, ensuring that the end-to-end service experience aligns with business objectives and technical constraints.

Job description

Who We Are
The Jones Payne Group is a design and planning firm dedicated to enhancing the places where we live, learn, and connect. We specialize in improving existing buildings and communities through architecture, planning, and specialized consulting services. Our team includes architects, project managers, construction managers, planners, community specialists, information technology experts, and other professionals.
Who We're Looking For
We are seeking an Architectural Designer with 2-6 years of experience and a professional degree in architecture. This position offers the opportunity to work on projects that reuse, rehabilitate, and modernize existing buildings, with a primary focus on the Residential Sound Insulation Program (RSIP) at Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport.
You'll help design specialized building envelope and acoustical mitigation improvements, including high-performance windows, doors, and air-sealing solutions that improve the quality of life for residents living near the airport.
This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career architect to work in a collaborative, supportive environment alongside principals, project managers, designers, and other team members while developing strong technical skills and making a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.
Key Responsibilities:
In this role, you will be involved in all aspects of project design and delivery for the BTV Sound Insulation Program, including:

  • Field Surveys: Conduct thorough field surveys of local residences to accurately document existing architectural conditions.
  • Design and Presentation: Develop architectural design concepts and create clear presentation materials for internal and community reviews.
  • Construction Documents: Prepare detailed, accurate construction documents and drawing sets for residential treatments.
  • Construction Administration: Assist with construction administration tasks to ensure compliance, quality control, and design intent are achieved in the field.
Candidate Qualifications:
  • Professional degree in Architecture (B.Arch or M.Arch) or a related field.
  • 2-6 years of experience in an architectural firm, design practice, or similar role.
  • Interest in community-focused design, building envelope systems, or acoustical and environmental mitigation.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam is preferred; willingness to learn new software and technologies is essential.
  • Strong design, visualization, and presentation skills.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and experience supporting projects from design development through construction administration.
  • Collaborative team player who enjoys working closely with others and values community-focused work.
  • Ability to travel domestically for project work, ranging from day trips to trips of up to two weeks.
Where Will You Work
This position is based in Burlington, Vermont.
What We Offer
Jones Payne provides a salary range of $58,000 to $75,000, commensurate with experience, and offers comprehensive benefits supporting your financial, personal, professional, and community well-being, including:
  • 401(k) retirement plan, flexible spending and health savings accounts, and access to financial advisors.
  • Health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance.
  • Support for continuing education, including certification/exam reimbursements and other professional development opportunities.
  • Paid time off for volunteering and community engagement.

Eligibility
This position requires U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status. Applicants must either reside in the Burlington area or be willing to relocate. Preference will be given to local candidates.
Diversity
Jones Payne is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to providing equal employment opportunities to all applicants and employees and do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable federal, state, or local law.
