What is a server internship?

A server internship is a temporary, entry-level position in the food service industry where interns learn how to serve food and beverages to customers in a restaurant or similar establishment. Interns gain hands-on experience with customer service, table setting, order taking, and food delivery under the guidance of experienced servers or supervisors. This role helps individuals develop practical skills, industry knowledge, and professionalism necessary for a future career in hospitality or food service.

What are some common challenges faced by interns in a server internship, and how can they be overcome?

Server internship roles often involve working in a fast-paced restaurant environment where multitasking and effective communication are essential. Interns may find it challenging to manage multiple tables, memorize menu details, and handle unexpected customer requests. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to observe experienced staff, ask questions proactively, and stay organized by using checklists. Building strong teamwork skills and maintaining a positive attitude can also make the learning process smoother and more enjoyable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Server Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Server Intern, you need a basic understanding of food service operations, customer service principles, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, order management tools, and basic food safety certifications is typically required. Excellent communication, teamwork, and multitasking abilities set outstanding candidates apart in fast-paced restaurant environments. These skills ensure efficient service, positive guest experiences, and smooth collaboration with kitchen and front-of-house staff.

Job description

If building secure, autonomous systems that safely deploy server software to one of the world's largest storage services excites you, the EBS Server Agility team is the place to do it. Our team builds and operates the deployment and patching infrastructure that keeps EBS server software current and secure across 400,000 bare-metal servers - infrastructure that serves millions of AWS customers and exabytes of data every day.
We're looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to drive the technical direction of our deployment and patching systems - from automated security patching that reaches every server every 15 days to train deployment pipelines that safely roll out new server software across dozens of AWS regions with zero customer impact. You'll lead the design of solutions to complex problems involving safe deployment to stateful storage systems, automated rollback and canary analysis, manifest consistency, and the transition from operator-in-the-loop to secure, autonomous server deployments.
Server deployment at EBS sits in the critical path for security compliance and feature velocity. We shape how EBS server software evolves to support new hardware platforms, new partitions (including edge and outpost), and new operational models. We regularly partner with principal engineers and teams across EC2 and EBS to deliver integrations that make server deployments safer and more efficient. If you want your technical leadership to have real impact at AWS scale, and you're excited by building secure systems that deploy themselves, we'd love to talk to you.
Key job responsibilities
- Architect and own deployment pipelines that safely deliver EBS server software across all AWS regions and partitions with zero customer impact
- Design and build automated security patching workflows that maintain manifest consistency and keep server software patched on a biweekly cadence
- Build safe deployment orchestration for stateful storage - coordinating with the storage engine to drain, update, and restore service without data loss
- Design automated canary analysis and rollback mechanisms that detect deployment issues and act before customers are impacted
- Build secure, zero-access operational infrastructure for deployment observability and autonomous server operations
- Drive toward secure, autonomous server deployments through AI-powered anomaly detection and self-healing automation
- Extend deployment and patching capabilities to new partitions and edge environments
- Lead design reviews and establish best practices for deployment safety across the team
A day in the life
Your work spans the full range of deployment engineering - from working through new payload requests and figuring out how to safely integrate new server components into the deployment train, to analyzing deployment data to identify inefficiencies and designing automated anomaly detection for the deployment services. You'll brainstorm rollout strategies for hotfixes that can't wait for the regular cadence, drive automation that eliminates manual operator steps, and partner with principal engineers and teams across EBS and EC2 on cross-service deployment integrations.
This is a high-visibility role. Server deployment decisions affect every EBS customer, and your work is regularly reviewed by senior leadership. You'll collaborate across organizational boundaries, influence technical direction beyond your immediate team, and represent deployment safety in discussions that shape how EBS evolves.
We value senior engineers who lead through ambiguity, reduce toil through smart automation, make principled tradeoffs between speed and safety, and elevate those around them.
About the team
You'll join a group of strong engineers who own the server deployment and patching infrastructure for EBS. We design and operate deployment pipelines that safely deliver validated server software to 400,000 bare-metal servers, automated patching systems that keep server software secure on a biweekly cadence, metrics collection infrastructure for deployment observability, and secure operational tooling for autonomous server operations. We move fast to deliver for customers while maintaining operational excellence across these mission-critical services.
We're a 10-person team in Boston building toward a future where server software patches and deploys itself - safely, securely, on schedule, with full visibility. There's significant greenfield opportunity: safe deployment to stateful bare-metal systems at global scale has almost no off-the-shelf solutions, so you'll be designing from first principles.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
