What is a sensory scientist manager?

Sensory Scientist Managers are professionals who oversee the design, execution, and interpretation of sensory evaluations to assess products such as food, beverages, cosmetics, or consumer goods. They lead teams that use human senses (taste, smell, touch, sight, and hearing) to gather data on product characteristics and consumer preferences. In addition to managing sensory testing, they often collaborate with product development, quality assurance, and marketing teams to ensure products meet both quality standards and customer expectations. Their role requires expertise in sensory science methodologies, data analysis, and team leadership.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a sensory scientist manager?

To thrive as a Sensory Scientist Manager, you need expertise in sensory and consumer science, statistical analysis, and a relevant degree such as food science or psychology. Familiarity with sensory evaluation methods, data analysis software (like Compusense or XLSTAT), and certifications such as Certified Sensory Professional (CSP) are often required. Outstanding leadership, communication, and project management skills help in guiding teams and collaborating with cross-functional partners. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring scientifically sound sensory research, driving innovation, and supporting product success.

How does a sensory scientist manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve product development?

A Sensory Scientist Manager works closely with teams such as R&D, marketing, and quality assurance to ensure that consumer preferences are integrated into product development. They design and oversee sensory evaluation studies, analyze data, and present actionable insights to stakeholders. Effective collaboration is essential, as this role often bridges technical findings with business goals, facilitating communication between scientists and non-technical team members. This cross-functional teamwork helps accelerate product innovation and ensures that products meet both quality standards and consumer expectations.

From the company that brought you the Ninja CREAMi and Shark FlexStyle, SharkNinja is on a mission to redefine how consumers experience everyday products. This hybrid role sits at the intersection of sensory science, consumer research and new product development, combining scientific rigor with consumer understanding to help teams create differentiated, 5 star product experiences.
What You'll Do
  • Own sensory science and product experience research across Shark and Ninja, independently designing and executing sensory studies including descriptive analysis, discrimination, preference, ranking and scaling; managing trained and semi trained panels; establishing sensory attributes and benchmarks; and leveraging sensory software such as Compusense, EyeQuestion, RedJade, FIZZ or similar platforms to analyze experiences including taste, texture, aroma, sound, tactile feel and ergonomics.
  • Design and execute qualitative and quantitative consumer research including product testing, IHUTs, surveys, focus groups and one on one interviews; independently developing research tools, analyzing consumer feedback and identifying the needs, behaviors and product experiences that drive preference, satisfaction and purchase.
  • Connect sensory science with the consumer voice to drive better product decisions, integrating objective sensory measurement, consumer perception and business context to identify what consumers notice, what matters most and what specifically needs to change; translating complex findings into clear recommendations for Product Development, Engineering, Culinary, Design and Marketing teams.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong technical foundation in sensory science, experimental design and sensory methodologies, with the ability to independently determine and execute the right approach for the business question.
  • Experience with sensory and consumer research software such as Compusense, EyeQuestion, RedJade, FIZZ, SIMS, XLSTAT or similar platforms, with working knowledge of statistical analysis.
  • Experience designing and executing consumer qualitative and quantitative research, with the ability to connect technical product measurements to consumer perception, preference and behavior.
  • Strong analytical and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex findings into simple, actionable product recommendations for technical and non technical audiences.
  • A hands on, curious and agile mindset, comfortable working directly with products and consumers in a fast paced development environment where priorities evolve quickly.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Sensory Science, Food Science, Consumer Science, Psychology, Behavioral Science, Statistics, Market Research or a related discipline.
  • 2 to 5 years of experience in Sensory Science, Sensory & Consumer Insights, Consumer Product Research, Product Experience Research or a related field.
  • Hands on experience independently designing and executing sensory studies is required.
  • Experience with CPG, food and beverage, appliances, beauty, personal care, household products or other consumer product industries preferred.
  • Experience conducting consumer research and moderating interviews, focus groups or other qualitative research strongly preferred.
