This role is similar to radio technician, electronics technician, communications technician, radio service, tower technician, telecommunications specialist, broadcast technologist, radio frequency (RF) signalman, power systems control craftsman and land mobile radio service positions.

A day in the life:
Diagnose user problems and questions, address complex problems on the mission critical statewide Public Safety Wireless system - the State's primary wireless communication medium used in critical situations state-wide.
Troubleshoot major system failures of the state-wide voice and data radio, microwave systems, and multi-agency dispatch console and other Wireless, IS and Dispatch Center staff solve problems.
Lead, assist and coordinate with other Wireless staff in resolution of complex or large statewide systems problem identification, isolation, and repairs resulting in restoration of OSP, ODOT and other governmental organization's Public Safety communications equipment.
Support the state's Public Safety Radio System customers and dispatch centers for mobile and portable radio needs with repairs, programming, and assistance.
Mentor and assist other Wireless Technicians.
Conduct research for large or unusual projects and for projects introducing new technology or business processes. Build implementation plans and recommendations which often involve multiple vendors, multiple jurisdictions and cross agency cooperation.
Use various types of soldering equipment to remove and replace defective circuit board components or individual modules.
Install, test, replace, or repair a variety of cable types used to support, connect, or install wireless equipment, including control cables, DC power distribution, multi-coupler and waveguide systems.
Plan equipment implementation schedule and documentation, ensure equipment configuration and compliance with specifications, assemble and provide direction for installation team(s) and complete system documentation and distributes as appropriate.
Operate a Sno-Cat or UTV (utility task vehicle) in inclement weather or rough conditions to gain access to remote locations to repair, install and provide emergency restoration of equipment or systems.
Climb and work on towers and antenna structures up to 180 feet above ground and work with high voltages.
Considerable region-wide or statewide travel in all weather conditions and time of day required.
Move or lift heavy objects excess of 70 pounds following safety procedures.

Minimum qualifications:
Five (5) years of information systems experience in in wireless systems (i.e., two-way radio, microwave);
OR
An associate's degree in computer science, information technology, or related field, OR completion of a two (2) year accredited vocational training program in information technology or related field; AND three (3) years of information systems experience in in wireless systems (i.e., two-way radio, microwave);
OR
A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or related field AND one (1) year of information systems experience in wireless systems (i.e., two-way radio, microwave).
Special qualifications:
This position requires a maximum 60 minute response time to 8085 Deer Creek Lane, Milwaukie, OR 97222 for emergency call-outs.
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid US driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

Journeyman level experience in Land Mobile Radio systems (VHF and UHF repeaters, Analog, Digital, and P25 radio, 700/800 Mhz. Trunked Radio), Terrestrial Microwave Systems, AC and DC power systems.
Experience with analog and IP Radio Dispatch Console Systems.
Proficiency with radio propagation software.
Good verbal and written communications skills and the ability to deal with difficult customers.
Computer literacy and competency in addition to a willingness to learn new technologies.
Familiarity with Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations pertaining to public service radio.
