Senior Verizon Rf Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Verizon RF Engineers when deploying new network sites?

Senior Verizon RF Engineers often encounter challenges such as optimizing coverage and capacity in dense urban environments, mitigating interference from existing infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. They may also need to balance multiple projects simultaneously, collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (such as site acquisition and construction), and adapt quickly to evolving technology standards. Effective problem-solving, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of RF principles are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring high-quality network performance.

What are Senior Verizon RF Engineers?

Senior Verizon RF Engineers are highly skilled professionals responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining the radio frequency (RF) networks that support Verizon's wireless communication services. They analyze network performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement solutions to enhance coverage, capacity, and quality. Their role often involves working with advanced technologies such as 5G, conducting site surveys, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure reliable and efficient wireless service for Verizon customers.

What is the difference between Senior Verizon Rf Engineer vs RF Engineer?

AspectSenior Verizon Rf EngineerRF Engineer

Work EnvironmentTelecom network sites, R&D labs, field testingTelecom network sites, R&D labs, field testing
Employer & Industry UsagePrimarily in Verizon and similar telecom companiesUsed across various telecom providers and contractors

The main difference is experience level and responsibility. Senior Verizon Rf Engineers typically have more experience, handle complex projects, and provide technical leadership within Verizon. RF Engineers may be earlier in their careers, focusing on design, testing, and maintenance tasks. Both roles require similar technical credentials and work environments, but the senior role involves greater oversight and strategic planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Verizon RF Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Verizon RF Engineer, you need deep expertise in radio frequency engineering principles, cellular technologies (such as LTE/5G), and typically a degree in electrical engineering or related field. Familiarity with RF planning and optimization tools like Atoll, TEMS, or Planet, as well as certifications such as iBwave or relevant vendor training, are highly valuable. Exceptional problem-solving, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help in collaborating across teams and troubleshooting complex network issues. These competencies ensure optimal network performance, efficient project delivery, and high-quality wireless service for customers.

At CableLabs we wake up every day to invent the future. CableLabs is a global, award-winning innovation and R&D lab dedicated to keeping people connected by building and orchestrating emergent technology and igniting co-innovation today for the broadband of tomorrow.
The Senior RF DOCSIS Test Engineer resides in the Lab Services department at CableLabs. This department is responsible for the execution of DOCSIS Certification as well as all commercial testing engagements. Our team plays a crucial role in delivering results that ensure compliant and robust cable modems and wireless equipment are available to our members.
Why This Role Is Exciting
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior RF Test Engineer with proven expertise in DOCSIS technologies and RF system testing for the cable industry. This role is critical in validating the performance, compliance, and reliability of DOCSIS-based equipment, ensuring products meet rigorous certification standards and industry specifications.
What You'll Do:
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve test environments, procedures, and scripts used to evaluate RF performance and interoperability, driving innovative solutions that increase efficiency and effectiveness across multiple certification programs. Conduct RF certification testing on DOCSIS equipment, independently resolving complex cross-system issues, and produce detailed test reports and certification documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze test results using analytical thinking to diagnose root causes across multiple systems and technologies, and present clear technical recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Operate and maintain advanced RF test and measurement equipment including Averna and ePIDoX PHY test systems, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, and oscilloscopes.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams that define the specifications and acceptance test procedures (ATPs), accurately execute those tests, and collaborate to troubleshoot and resolve problems as they arise.
  • Provide technical leadership to small project teams assigned to certification initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers and technicians on RF testing methodologies, equipment operation, and troubleshooting techniques, using formal and informal approaches to build team capability and redundancy
  • Stay current with DOCSIS standards, RF technologies, and cable industry trends to guide test strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What Is a Must Have:
  • 7+ years of experience in RF testing, certification, or system verification within the cable industry.
  • Strong working knowledge of DOCSIS HFC and network architectures, protocols, and industry standards
  • Familiarity with cable modem, CMTS, and network system testing.
  • Strong knowledge of RF circuit design, signal integrity, and system-level interactions.
  • Proficiency with RF test equipment (spectrum analyzers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, network analyzers, etc.).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to grasp new concepts quickly and apply them effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to present technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to work both independently and in team environments.

What Will Set You Apart:
  • Prior experience with Averna and ePIDoX PHY test systems.
  • In-depth understanding of the operation and functioning of physical layer technology in DOCSIS Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks.
  • Experience with automation tools and scripting languages for test execution (e.g., Python, Tcl).
  • Knowledge of compliance and certification processes with CableLabs or similar industry organizations.
  • Experience testing of wireless technologies (e.g. Wi-Fi, 5G NR).
