What does a senior telematics engineer do?

A Senior Telematics Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining telematics systems that integrate telecommunications and information technology to monitor and manage vehicles or equipment remotely. Their role typically involves overseeing the integration of hardware and software, ensuring data security, and optimizing system performance. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement new features, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Senior Telematics Engineers often mentor junior engineers and play a key role in project planning and execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior telematics engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Telematics Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, wireless communication protocols (like CAN, LTE, GPS), and a strong background in electrical or computer engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with telematics platforms, automotive diagnostic tools, and programming languages such as C/C++ and Python, along with industry certifications like ASE or SAE, is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and address complex challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable, innovative telematics solutions that meet both technical and business objectives in the connected vehicle industry.

What are some of the main challenges senior telematics engineers face when integrating new telematics solutions with legacy vehicle systems?

One of the main challenges Senior Telematics Engineers encounter is ensuring seamless compatibility between modern telematics solutions and existing legacy vehicle systems. This often involves addressing differences in communication protocols, data formats, and hardware interfaces. Engineers must also balance the need for enhanced features with security and reliability, often requiring creative problem-solving and thorough testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as software developers and vehicle manufacturers, is essential to address integration issues efficiently and deliver robust solutions.

Job description

What we're looking for:

We need a senior backend engineer with 5+ years of experience building production systems who has deep expertise in security, cryptography, and cloud infrastructure. You should be comfortable owning a platform end-to-end in a small, fast-moving team and have a track record of shipping secure, scalable backend services from scratch. Bonus points if you have experience with IoT, telematics, or fleet management systems where hardware communicates with cloud services.

What you'll do:
  • Architect, develop, and maintain the complete Secure Fleet & Financing Management System - backend APIs, web application, and supporting infrastructure - from the ground up
  • Design and implement secure authentication, authorization, and encryption mechanisms to protect sensitive vehicle and financing data
  • Collaborate with embedded and electrical teams to integrate backend services with physical on-vehicle hardware (IoT/telematics)
  • Define and operate cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes as the sole owner of the backend platform
  • Integrate backend services with mobile and web-based tools for end users, internal administrators, and merchant/point-of-sale systems
  • Provide technical leadership on architecture decisions, framework choices, and long-term platform strategy
  • Establish best practices for code quality, testing, logging, and system observability as the platform scales
Tech stack:

Go, TypeScript, AWS, GCP, Azure, Docker, CI/CD, MQTT, WebSockets, REST APIs, Cryptography, IoT
