Senior Telematics Engineer information

What does a senior telematics engineer do?

A Senior Telematics Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining telematics systems that integrate telecommunications and information technology to monitor and manage vehicles or equipment remotely. Their role typically involves overseeing the integration of hardware and software, ensuring data security, and optimizing system performance. They also collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement new features, troubleshoot issues, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Senior Telematics Engineers often mentor junior engineers and play a key role in project planning and execution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior telematics engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Telematics Engineer, you need expertise in embedded systems, wireless communication protocols (like CAN, LTE, GPS), and a strong background in electrical or computer engineering, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with telematics platforms, automotive diagnostic tools, and programming languages such as C/C++ and Python, along with industry certifications like ASE or SAE, is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and address complex challenges. These skills and qualifications are crucial for designing reliable, innovative telematics solutions that meet both technical and business objectives in the connected vehicle industry.

What are some of the main challenges senior telematics engineers face when integrating new telematics solutions with legacy vehicle systems?

One of the main challenges Senior Telematics Engineers encounter is ensuring seamless compatibility between modern telematics solutions and existing legacy vehicle systems. This often involves addressing differences in communication protocols, data formats, and hardware interfaces. Engineers must also balance the need for enhanced features with security and reliability, often requiring creative problem-solving and thorough testing. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as software developers and vehicle manufacturers, is essential to address integration issues efficiently and deliver robust solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Telematics Engineer vs Telematics Engineer?

AspectSenior Telematics EngineerTelematics Engineer

Job description

Junior Telematics Engineer

Junior Telematics Engineer / Connected Vehicle System Analyst
Position Overview
We are seeking a Junior Telematics Engineer / Connected Vehicle System Analyst to support and maintain our vehicle telematics platforms. The role focuses on database operations, wireless carrier systems, vehicle telematics data analysis, and troubleshooting client-server integrations. You will work closely with engineering, product, and carrier partners to resolve issues, run SQL queries, manage tickets in JIRA, and help ensure reliable connectivity and data flow for connected vehicle services. This is an entry-level role with opportunities to grow into deeper connected car and API development responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor telematics platform health and connectivity across wireless carriers, identifying and escalating issues.
  • Perform database operations including queries, data validation, backups, and routine maintenance using SQL.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot vehicle telematics data flows, connectivity problems, and device behavior using logs and diagnostic tools.
  • Create, run, and optimize SQL queries to support incident investigations, reporting, and data analysis.
  • Support client-server architecture operations, including analyzing request/response flows and verifying integrations.
  • Manage and resolve tickets in JIRA and other ticketing systems; document findings and remediation steps clearly.
  • Coordinate with wireless carriers, device vendors, and internal teams to reproduce, diagnose, and remediate reported problems.
  • Validate and test API requests and API calls (REST) related to telematics services; capture and report request/response payloads for debugging.
  • Prepare technical notes, runbooks, and knowledge base articles to improve incident response and team onboarding.
  • Participate in release verification, configuration changes, and small deployments as directed by senior engineers.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Automotive Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1+ years of experience in telematics, connected vehicle systems, or a related technical support/analysis role.
  • Proven experience with database operations and writing SQL queries for data retrieval and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with wireless carrier systems and cellular connectivity troubleshooting (e.g., SIM, APN, signal/coverage issues).
  • Working knowledge of vehicle telematics concepts and data (e.g., GPS, CAN/OBD-II basics, device telemetry).
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with experience analyzing logs, network traces, and system behavior.
  • Understanding of client-server architecture and how backend services interact with devices.
  • Experience using JIRA and other ticketing systems to manage incidents and communicate status.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to collaborate across cross-functional teams.
  • Nice to have: hands-on experience with connected car platforms, REST APIs and API request/response debugging, scripting (Python, Bash), familiarity with MQTT/HTTP/JSON protocols, and prior exposure to ticketing and incident management systems.

Benefits

Benefits include:

  •  Health (Individual and Dependents 100% coverage)
  • Dental
  • Vision
  • 401K
  • 15 days PTO
