Senior Technical Officer information

What is a senior technical officer?

Senior Technical Officers are experienced professionals who oversee and manage technical operations within an organization. They are responsible for supervising technical staff, ensuring the quality and efficiency of technical processes, and providing expert guidance on complex technical issues. Their role often includes project management, troubleshooting, and implementing new technologies or procedures. Senior Technical Officers typically work in fields such as engineering, information technology, healthcare, or scientific research, depending on the organization's focus.

What are some common challenges senior technical officers face when managing cross-functional projects?

Senior Technical Officers often oversee projects that require collaboration between multiple departments, such as engineering, IT, and operations. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication and alignment of goals across diverse teams with different priorities. Additionally, they must balance technical requirements with budget and timeline constraints, while also providing mentorship to junior staff. Successful Senior Technical Officers use strong project management skills and proactive stakeholder engagement to navigate these complexities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior technical officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Technical Officer, you need advanced technical expertise in your field, a relevant degree (such as engineering or IT), and substantial experience in technical project management. Familiarity with industry-specific tools, regulatory standards, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are often required. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills are essential to lead teams and liaise with stakeholders. These competencies ensure effective project execution, compliance, and innovation in complex technical environments.

Job description

Vice President, Senior Broker & Technical Specialist – Financial Services Group

Do you enjoy combining collaboration and technical expertise? Meeting with clients one day and deep diving into policy wording the next? Are you the person who likes dissecting policy language, debating the “fine print,” and making sure every clause works in the client’s best interest? Do you want to be the broker at the table and the go-to technical expert others rely on for answers? If so, the Senior Broker & Technical Specialist opportunity within Aon’s Financial Services Group could be your next move.

Thus role is open to candidates located in any Canadian city with an Aon office.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in Canada. This role is not eligible for sponsorship, and we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa or work permit.

  • Prepare and present renewal proposals and support the team in securing new business
  • Negotiate with underwriters to secure the best terms and conditions, regarding premiums and breadth of coverage
  • Follow up with insurers to ensure that the negotiated terms and conditions are adequately captured in the policy wordings
  • Review and approve documentation for new contracts, policy changes, additions and deletions
  • Stay up to date on market conditions and legal developments to act as a technical resource to the Financial Services Group on policy wordings and coverage structures

  • Serve as the key liaison with insurers’ technical specialists to negotiate terms and conditions, identify and remedy coverage discrepancies and approval final wordings
  • Provide guidance to colleagues on coverage interpretation, claims scenarios and contract implications
  • Develop, maintain and share standard methodologies, templates and technical guidance relating executive risk wordings
  • Build and maintain strong relationships within the underwriting and technical specialist community to secure optimal premiums, coverage and wordings for Aon clients

How this opportunity is different

As a Senior Broker & Technical Specialist, you will be part of Aon’s national Financial Services Group. You’ll be supported in your development through training, collaboration, and mentorship, and you’ll work closely with account managers and other brokers, acting both as a placement lead and as a trusted technical advisor.

Your work will have a significant impact on clients’ risk transfer strategies, particularly in relation to their executive risks, which may include directors’ and officers’ liability, fiduciary liability (pension plan), employment practices liability, fidelity/crime, and other financial lines solutions. In addition to broking, you will be the “goto” person on policy wording, technical issues, and complex contract reviews, and act as a key point of contact for insurers’ technical specialists.

Skills and experience that will lead to success

  • Minimum of 7–10 years’ experience in the insurance industry, with meaningful experience in Directors & Officers (D&O) and related financial lines (e.g., EPL, fiduciary, crime, professional liability)
  • Demonstrated expertise in reviewing and negotiating complex insurance contracts and endorsements
  • Experience working closely with legal, claims or technical teams (either in a law firm, insurer, broker, or large corporate/financial institution) is a strong asset
  • Possession of a valid RIBO licence or other applicable licence, or a clear intention to obtain it within 3 months of joining
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information clearly and professionally to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a high degree of comfort working with detailed legal and contractual language
  • A background in law, claims, compliance or finance in the financial services space is considered a significant asset
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues and underwriting/technical counterparts at insurers

Aon is not accepting unsolicited resumes from search firms for this position. If you are a search firm, you will not be compensated in any way for your submission of a candidate, even if Aon hires that candidate.
