What is a senior tax manager?

A Senior Tax Manager is an experienced tax professional who oversees a company's tax compliance, planning, and reporting. They manage tax teams, ensure adherence to tax laws and regulations, and develop strategies to minimize tax liabilities. Senior Tax Managers often collaborate with other departments and advise upper management on tax implications of business decisions. Their role is critical in maintaining financial health and avoiding costly penalties for the organization.

What does a senior tax manager do?

A senior tax manager's primary responsibilities are to supervise a team of other tax professionals and complete a variety of additional tax-related duties for a company. In this career, you are responsible for overseeing internal audits, developing and maintaining company tax policies, and ensuring the business is in compliance with relevant tax codes on local, state, federal, and even international levels. Some senior tax managers still work one-on-one with clients, but the client is typically a larger or more complex one than they worked with at lower levels. In addition to these responsibilities, you also document after-tax revenue payments, deductions, and other expenses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior tax manager?

To excel as a Senior Tax Manager, you need deep expertise in tax law, compliance, and financial analysis, typically backed by a CPA or similar qualification and significant experience in tax roles. Familiarity with tax preparation software, ERP systems, and advanced Excel skills is essential for managing complex tax filings and reporting. Strong leadership, communication, and analytical thinking help you guide teams and advise clients or stakeholders effectively. These skills ensure accurate tax reporting, minimize risk, and support strategic business decision-making in a dynamic regulatory environment.

What are some common challenges faced by senior tax managers when managing multiple client portfolios?

Senior Tax Managers often juggle numerous client portfolios simultaneously, each with unique compliance requirements and deadlines. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills, the ability to prioritize tasks, and effective delegation to team members. Additionally, staying updated on evolving tax laws and ensuring both accuracy and timeliness in filings can be demanding. Collaboration with internal teams and clear communication with clients are essential to successfully navigate these challenges and deliver high-quality service.

We're committed to providing accommodation throughout the application, interview, and employment process. If you require accommodation to be at your best, please let us know during the application process. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in recruiting is just getting started, so we know you have questions about how and why we use it. At certain points during our recruiting process, we rely on AI to improve your experience. This could be during resume review or curating personalized job recommendations, asking you clarifying questions via a chatbot or during our interview scheduling to improve your experience. Our use of AI helps ensure we combat bias by evaluating candidates equally and fairly, without seeing identity information, such as your name, or gender for example). AI also helps us better predict successful hires by reviewing all applicants for a role and the relationship between your skills, experience and likely success at PwC Canada. While AI supports parts of our recruitment process, final hiring decisions always involve human review. For more information about our use and protection of your data, please refer to our Privacy Policy (https://www.pwc.com/ca/en/privacy-policy.html).Nous tenons a repondre a vos besoins tout au long du processus de demande d'emploi, d'entrevue et d'embauche.
