What is a senior systems architect?

A Senior Systems Architect is responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of complex IT infrastructure and software systems. They analyze business needs, create architecture blueprints, and ensure scalability, security, and efficiency. This role requires collaboration with stakeholders, development teams, and IT personnel to align technology solutions with business goals. Senior Systems Architects also evaluate emerging technologies and establish best practices to optimize system performance and maintainability.

What are the main responsibilities of a senior systems architect on a day-to-day basis?

A Senior Systems Architect typically spends their days designing high-level system architectures, reviewing technical requirements, and collaborating with software engineers, network specialists, and project managers to ensure seamless integration of system components. They often lead architecture review meetings, create detailed documentation, and provide guidance on best practices for system scalability, security, and performance. In addition to technical tasks, they may mentor junior team members and participate in long-term technology planning. This balanced mix of hands-on technical work and strategic oversight ensures that business objectives are supported by robust, reliable IT solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the senior systems architect position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Systems Architect, you need a deep understanding of systems engineering, software architecture, and IT infrastructure, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like AWS, Azure, VMware, enterprise integration frameworks, and relevant certifications (such as TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect) is highly valued. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities help you collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and manage complex projects. These skills are crucial for designing scalable, secure systems that meet organizational goals and adapt to evolving business needs.

In this role, you will work within a multidisciplinary team to develop and maintain requirements databases in DOORS NG, support development of system models using CAMEO and SysML, IBM Engineering Lifecycle Management (ELM) tool development, drive digital engineering practices, and ensure system-level traceability across complex systems.
This is a hands-on technical role focused on enabling rapid, traceable, and scalable system development through digital tools. You will collaborate closely with system leads, hardware, and test teams to capture system architecture, decompose requirements, and validate system behavior through modeling.
Key Responsibilities
• Requirements Decomposition: Translate high-level system and mission requirements into structured models and ensure end-to-end traceability through DOORS NG, Jira or similar tools.
• MBSE Development & Maintenance: Create and maintain SysML-based models using CAMEO to represent system architecture, behavior, interfaces, and requirements across the aircraft engine lifecycle.
• Process assurance: Compliance assurance of the Systems plans (requirements validation, system model validation, and change management)
• Interface Definition: Model and manage system and subsystem interfaces to support hardware and software integration across aircraft, propulsion, avionics, and sensors.
• Digital Engineering Collaboration: Work closely with design, and test, teams to ensure consistent use of system models for verification planning and design validation.
• System Integration Support: Assist with integration efforts by using system models to inform development, identify dependencies, and support test readiness.
• Documentation & Compliance: Generate documentation to support airworthiness, safety, and programmatic reviews using MBSE artifacts, system models and Microsoft tools.
• Continuous Improvement: Advocate for Systems best practices, improve requirements development and modeling workflows, and support adoption of Systems related tools across engineering teams.
Qualifications
MUST HAVE:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a technical discipline such as the sciences, technology, engineering or mathematics
• 4+ years of experience in systems engineering and RBE roles supporting aerospace systems.
• Working knowledge of requirements tools such as DOORS NG and Jira.
• Working knowledge of SysML tools such as CAMEO.
• Familiarity with system engineering processes, V-model, and lifecycle traceability.
• Ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
WE VALUE:
• 2+ years of experience in MBSE roles supporting aerospace systems
• 2+ years of experience using the IBM ELM suite of tools in roles supporting aerospace systems
• Experience modeling complex system architectures and interfaces.
• Hands-on experience with CAMEO Systems Modeler and a strong understanding of SysML.
• Understanding of modular open systems architecture (MOSA) principles.
• Deep understanding of ARP4754, ARP4761, MIL-STD-881, 882, and system safety frameworks.
• Exposure to airworthiness certification or flight test support.
Due to compliance with U.S. export control laws and regulations, candidate must be a U.S. person, which is defined as, a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or have protected status in the U.S. under asylum or refugee status.
