Job description

Intermediate / Senior Structural Engineer – Restoration

Calgary, Alberta | Building Restoration | Structural Rehabilitation | Building Consulting

Are you a Structural Engineer who enjoys figuring out why buildings are failing, how they can be repaired, and how to extend the life of existing structures?

We're partnering with a well-established multidisciplinary consulting engineering firm in Calgary that is looking to add an Intermediate or Senior Structural Engineer with a focus on building restoration and rehabilitation to its growing team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys working with existing buildings and wants to be involved in projects that require more than simply designing from a blank set of drawings. You'll investigate existing structures, identify deficiencies, develop practical repair and rehabilitation solutions, and work closely with clients, contractors, architects, and other consultants throughout the project lifecycle.

The role offers exposure to a diverse portfolio of commercial, institutional, residential, healthcare, and other existing buildings, with opportunities to take increasing ownership of projects and client relationships.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Conduct structural investigations and condition assessments of existing buildings and structures.
  • Identify structural deficiencies, deterioration, damage, and potential causes of building issues.
  • Perform field investigations, site reviews, inspections, and structural assessments.
  • Develop practical and cost-effective repair, rehabilitation, and restoration solutions.
  • Design structural repairs and modifications involving concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and other structural systems.
  • Prepare structural calculations, technical reports, repair specifications, drawings, and tender documentation.
  • Assess existing structural systems and determine appropriate rehabilitation strategies.
  • Develop repair details for issues such as concrete deterioration, corrosion, cracking, water damage, structural movement, and other deficiencies.
  • Work closely with architects, building envelope consultants, mechanical and electrical engineers, contractors, property managers, and building owners.
  • Participate in construction administration, including site reviews, RFIs, shop drawing reviews, change orders, and contractor coordination.
  • Communicate directly with clients and provide technical recommendations regarding existing building conditions.
  • Assist with project budgeting, scheduling, proposals, and project management.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and designers at the Senior level.
  • Support business development and contribute to maintaining strong long-term client relationships.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • P.Eng. with APEGA, or eligibility for registration.
  • 5–8+ years of structural engineering experience.
  • Experience within building restoration, rehabilitation, structural assessment, forensic engineering, or existing-building consulting.
  • Strong understanding of existing structural systems and building construction.
  • Experience with concrete, steel, wood, masonry, and other building structural systems.
  • Experience conducting field investigations and condition assessments.
  • Strong technical report writing and engineering documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Building Code, CSA standards, and applicable structural design codes.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software.
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an interest in investigating complex building issues.

Why You'll Want to Consider This Opportunity

If you enjoy the investigative side of structural engineering, this is an opportunity to work on projects where every building presents a different challenge.

You'll be involved in understanding what happened, why it happened, and how to fix it from initial investigation through to the final repair.

Meaningful Project Work

Your work will directly impact the safety, functionality, and longevity of existing buildings.

Projects may include:

  • Commercial buildings
  • Multi-family residential
  • Healthcare facilities
  • Educational institutions
  • Institutional buildings

  • Heritage and older buildings
  • Industrial facilities

  • Take ownership of projects.
  • Develop client relationships.
  • Lead investigations and assessments.
  • Mentor junior staff.
  • Manage projects and budgets.
  • Participate in business development.
  • Progress toward senior leadership.

Collaborative Multidisciplinary Environment

You'll work alongside experienced professionals across structural, mechanical, electrical, building science, and other consulting disciplines, providing opportunities to approach complex building issues from a broader perspective.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience.
  • Annual performance reviews and salary growth.
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits.
  • RRSP program.
  • Professional development support.
  • Paid professional memberships and continuing education.
