Job description

Senior Mechanical Engineer – Building Consulting

Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Industry: Consulting Engineering / Building Design
Employment Type: Full-Time

This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer who wants more than simply designing projects. The ideal candidate will be someone who enjoys being involved in project leadership, client relationships, mentoring, technical direction, and the continued growth of a mechanical engineering practice.

You'll have the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of building projects while taking on increasing responsibility within the organization. For the right person, there is also a clear path toward senior leadership and future ownership opportunities.

  • Lead mechanical engineering design for a variety of commercial, institutional, healthcare, residential, and mixed-use building projects
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers and designers
  • Develop mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, hydronics, and related building services
  • Manage mechanical engineering projects from initial concept through detailed design, construction documentation, and contract administration
  • Review drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, and technical documentation
  • Coordinate mechanical systems with architectural, structural, electrical, and other project disciplines
  • Participate in client meetings and develop strong long-term client relationships
  • Provide technical guidance during construction and respond to RFIs, site issues, and design changes
  • Assist with project proposals, scopes, budgets, and schedules
  • Contribute to business development and the continued growth of the mechanical practice
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal design standards, processes, and technical capabilities
  • Help develop and mentor the next generation of mechanical engineers and designers

What We're Looking For

  • P.Eng. designation in Alberta or eligibility for registration
  • 8+ years of experience in mechanical consulting engineering
  • Strong experience within the building design/consulting environment
  • Experience designing HVAC and mechanical systems for commercial, institutional, healthcare, residential, or mixed-use buildings
  • Strong understanding of applicable Alberta and Canadian building codes and standards
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, HAP, or other relevant engineering/design software
  • Strong technical design and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience leading projects and/or mentoring other engineers and designers
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and competing priorities
  • A desire to take on greater responsibility and contribute to the growth and direction of a mechanical engineering practice

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is a role designed for someone who is ready to take the next step beyond being the person who simply delivers the design.

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Take ownership of significant mechanical projects
  • Work alongside an experienced and collaborative engineering team
  • Have a meaningful voice in technical and business decisions
  • Mentor and develop a growing team
  • Build and strengthen client relationships
  • Play an active role in growing the mechanical practice
  • Progress toward senior leadership, Principal, and/or ownership opportunities
  • Work on interesting and technically challenging building projects throughout Alberta

Only candidates with a consulting engineering background and experience designing mechanical systems for buildings will be considered.
