What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Subsea Engineer, and why are they important?

A Senior Subsea Engineer requires a strong background in mechanical or subsea engineering, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree and significant offshore project experience. Proficiency with industry-specific software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and subsea analysis tools, along with certifications like IMCA or OPITO, is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial to ensure the safe, efficient, and innovative design and operation of subsea systems in complex offshore environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Subsea Engineers in offshore projects?

Senior Subsea Engineers often encounter challenges related to harsh environmental conditions, complex equipment installation, and strict safety regulations during offshore projects. Coordination among multidisciplinary teams—including ROV operators, project managers, and fabrication specialists—is crucial to ensure successful deployment and maintenance of subsea systems. Additionally, troubleshooting unexpected technical issues in remote locations requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make quick, informed decisions. Staying updated with evolving technology and industry standards is also essential for long-term success in this role.

What are Senior Subsea Engineers?

Senior Subsea Engineers are experienced professionals who design, manage, and maintain underwater equipment and systems, primarily for the oil and gas industry. They oversee the installation, operation, and integrity of subsea infrastructure such as pipelines, control systems, and production equipment. Their role also involves troubleshooting technical issues, ensuring safety and environmental compliance, and leading engineering teams on complex projects. Senior Subsea Engineers often collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and play a key part in project planning and execution.

What is the difference between Senior Subsea Engineer vs Subsea Engineer?

AspectSenior Subsea EngineerSubsea Engineer

Job description

AVEVA is creating software trusted by over 90% of leading industrial companies.
Salary Range:
$213,500.00 - $425,500.00
This pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation that the position offers, and final compensation can vary within the range depending on work location, job experience, skills, and relevant educational attainment and/or training.
Position: Distinguished AI Engineer
Location: San Leandro, CA; Boston, MA; New York, NY
Employment Type: Full-time
The job
We are seeking an experienced AI technologist to join our AI Investigation and Incubation team. This is a hands-on engineering lead role, focused on investigating, prototyping, and validating emerging AI technologies to drive innovation and real-world solutions.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for both exploring new frontiers in AI and turning emerging concepts into working systems with expertise making architectural trade-offs, and proving feasibility through code, experiments, and deployable prototypes. A strong technical foundation with experience working at the intersection of AI exploration and hands-on incubation is critical for this role.
Key responsibilities

  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies with a clear focus on practical applicability and deployability
  • Investigate, develop, fine-tune, evaluate, and benchmark AI/ML models
  • Design, build, and iterate on working prototypes, proof-of-concepts, and pilots
  • Assess AI approaches for scalability, reliability, cost, security, and operational feasibility
  • Make and document AI investigation and architectural decisions related to model deployment and integration
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to ensure AI proofs-of-concept, prototypes, and pilots can transition to later stage development and/or downstream products
  • Clearly document findings and present actionable recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Mentor and coach junior team members
Essential requirements
  • 12+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, or equivalent industry experience with at least 4 years in a technical lead position
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI/ML, Engineering or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred
  • Proven track record leading and delivering large-scale AI/ML incubations or complex deep tech cross-functional initiatives with measurable outcomes
  • Expertise in Python and deep experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., Jax, TensorFlow, PyTorch) and state-of-the-art ML techniques (building, training, evaluating, deploying ML models)
  • Practical experience with modern AI paradigms such as: world models, foundation models, and multi-modal language models; agent-based systems and orchestration; and context retrieval and augmentation techniques
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills; can articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including senior leadership
  • Experience industrial, IoT, manufacturing, energy, or asset-intensive domains
  • Ability to connect AI capabilities to practical industrial or enterprise use cases
Desired skills and competencies
  • Exposure to AI governance, security, or compliance considerations
  • Experience deploying ML models in cloud environments (Azure preferred, AWS acceptable)
  • Familiarity with MLOps practices (model versioning, evaluation, monitoring, iteration)
  • Experience working with non-ideal, real-world data rather than curated research datasets
  • Experience working in both enterprise and start up environments
  • Interesting in supporting technical and scientific publications on AI research
What success looks like
  • AI concepts progress beyond research into validated, working prototypes and pilots
  • Technical investigations result in clear go / no-go recommendations
  • Prototypes and pilots demonstrate feasibility for real-world deployment, not just benchmark performance
  • Strong collaboration with cross-functional technical and non-technical teams to enable transition into later stage development, where appropriate
  • Ability to meaningfully influence AI roadmaps and technology direction through evidence-backed work
