What is a senior site reliability engineer?

Senior Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) are experienced IT professionals who ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of complex software systems. They bridge the gap between software development and operations by automating processes, monitoring system health, responding to incidents, and implementing best practices for system stability. Senior SREs often lead teams, design resilient infrastructure, and mentor junior engineers to improve overall reliability and efficiency in technology environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior site reliability engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you need deep experience in systems administration, software engineering, automation, and cloud infrastructure, typically supported by a related degree and several years in SRE or DevOps roles. Proficiency with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, monitoring platforms (e.g., Prometheus, Datadog), and certifications in AWS, GCP, or Azure are common requirements. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a proactive mindset help you collaborate across teams and respond quickly to incidents. These skills ensure high system reliability, scalability, and rapid recovery from failures, which are critical to business continuity.

What are some typical challenges a senior site reliability engineer faces when balancing system reliability with rapid feature releases?

Senior Site Reliability Engineers often navigate the challenge of maintaining high system uptime and stability while supporting fast-paced software development cycles. This involves implementing robust automation and monitoring, collaborating closely with development teams to ensure new features don't compromise reliability, and proactively addressing potential bottlenecks. Effective communication and prioritization are key, as SREs must advocate for best practices in reliability without slowing down innovation. Continuous learning and adaptation are vital to keep up with evolving technology stacks and complex distributed systems.

What does a senior site reliability engineer do?

A senior site reliability engineer (SRE) is responsible for maintaining and improving the reliability, availability, and performance of large-scale systems and services. They develop automation tools, monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and implement best practices to ensure continuous operation, often using skills in coding, systems administration, and cloud platforms.

Company Description

VERSANT (Nasdaq: VSNT) is an industry-changing media and entertainment business and home to trusted brands that shape culture, inform audiences, and build lasting connections. It operates across four core markets: political news and opinion, business news and personal finance, golf, and sports and genre entertainment. These markets are served through a powerful portfolio of iconic and innovative brands, including CNBC, MS NOW, USA Network, Golf Channel, Oxygen, E!, SYFY, and Versant's sports division USA Sports, along with complementary digital assets including Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, GolfNow and GolfPass.

Job Description

The Opportunity:

Versant's Sports & Entertainment Digital Products division is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to help drive the reliability, scalability, and usability of internal developer platforms, tooling, and engineering workflows across a portfolio of industry-leading brands including Fandango, Fandango at Home, Rotten Tomatoes, SportsEngine, GolfNow, and GolfPass.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader within the platform engineering ecosystem, helping shape engineering standards, drive reliability initiatives, and influence the evolution of developer experience capabilities across multiple product teams. You will partner across engineering, platform operations, and security teams to build scalable self-service capabilities, reduce operational friction, and enable teams to deliver software safely and efficiently.

Why This Role Matters:

Developer productivity is a force multiplier. By improving tooling, platform reliability, deployment workflows, and observability, this role directly impacts the speed, quality, and stability of product delivery across experiences that serve millions of sports and entertainment fans worldwide.

Work Environment:

This role is designated as fully remote and is expected to be performed from a non-Versant worksite, typically an employee's residence. While primarily remote, occasional in-person collaboration opportunities, team meetings, and business gatherings may occur throughout the year.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead the design, implementation, and operation of reliable internal developer platforms and self-service infrastructure provisioning capabilities.
  • Build, maintain, and optimize CI/CD pipelines, deployment workflows, and automation across GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD, and related technologies.
  • Apply Site Reliability Engineering principles, including SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and DORA metrics, to improve developer-facing systems and software delivery performance.
  • Drive adoption of engineering best practices, platform standards, and self-service capabilities across multiple engineering teams.
  • Develop and maintain golden paths, service templates, scaffolding tools, and standardized engineering workflows that accelerate software delivery and reduce operational complexity.
  • Improve local development environments, CLI tooling, environment provisioning, preview deployments, and ephemeral environments to enhance developer productivity.
  • Build observability solutions and dashboards that provide visibility into CI/CD health, deployment success, build performance, developer wait times, and platform reliability.
  • Partner with engineering teams to identify sources of operational toil and implement automation that improves efficiency, reliability, and developer experience.
  • Support cloud-native workloads and deployment patterns across containers, serverless technologies, and event-driven architectures.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues impacting developer workflows, including build failures, test instability, deployment issues, and environment drift.
  • Collaborate with Security and Platform Operations teams to embed secure-by-default controls and compliance guardrails into developer workflows.
  • Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance on platform architecture, automation strategies, observability, and cloud-native development practices.
  • Influence platform roadmaps and technical investments through data-driven recommendations and cross-functional collaboration.
Qualifications

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of experience in Site Reliability Engineering, Platform Engineering, Developer Experience, DevOps, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Experience building and supporting internal developer platforms, self-service infrastructure, or developer tooling.
  • Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD technologies, including GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ArgoCD, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with AWS cloud services and Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, or Pulumi.
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Go, Bash, TypeScript, or similar languages.
  • Experience working with containerized environments and orchestration technologies including Docker, ECS, and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with observability practices and tools, including Datadog and application performance monitoring solutions.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple teams or product domains.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to create clear technical documentation, guides, and operational runbooks.
  • Experience supporting modern application frameworks and cloud-native architectures.
  • Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation supporting production systems and developer platforms.

Bonus Points:

  • AWS certifications such as Solutions Architect or DevOps Engineer.
  • Experience supporting high-scale consumer-facing digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with cloud cost optimization and FinOps practices.
  • Experience with developer portals, service catalogs, or internal platform products.

How We Do It at Versant:

  • Trust by building reliable systems, following through on commitments, and prioritizing operational excellence.

  • Teamwork by partnering effectively across engineering, platform, security, and product teams to achieve shared goals.

  • Transparency by communicating clearly, documenting decisions, sharing knowledge, and promoting visibility into platform health and performance.

  • Agility by adapting quickly to changing priorities, embracing continuous improvement, and solving complex technical challenges.

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit by identifying opportunities for automation, innovation, and platform enhancements that improve developer productivity and business outcomes.

Why You'll Love It Here:

At Versant, you'll have the opportunity to work on technology platforms that power some of the most recognized brands in sports and entertainment. Your work will help millions of users discover content, stream experiences, connect with their communities, and engage with the activities they love.

In addition to meaningful work and opportunities for growth, Versant offers a comprehensive benefits package, a collaborative and inclusive culture, and the flexibility of a remote-first work environment.
