ABOUT THE ROLE

The Senior Estimator is responsible for managing the estimating process for assigned projects or for portions of a project requiring special expertise. The Senior Estimator is accountable for the quality of the work prepared under his/her direction, and is required to work closely with the owner, design consultant and project manager to prepare cost plans, undertake value engineering, complete cost saving exercises and develop the project budget. The Senior Estimator will be familiar with and follow ACL estimating and quality procedures and will adhere to the Alberici Subcontractor Fairness Policy as well as ensuring the needs of the client are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a positive working relationship with the owner and the owner’s agents.
  • Produces detailed quantity take-off and prices labour, material and equipment portions of estimates.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with suppliers/subcontractors to ensure competitive pricing.
  • Manages the estimating process including site conditions, safety requirements, and interpretation of project drawings and specifications.
  • Identifies and quantifies potential project risks and assists management with risk analysis.

Pre-Construction Procurement

  • Lead internal construction project start-up meeting and administrative project set up.
  • Actively participate in developing procurement plans, labour and equipment forecast, logistics plan and site workflow.
  • Develop Bid Packages including scopes of work, drawing packages, and specifications.
  • Monitor and maintain preconstruction schedule.
  • Participate in design, constructability and value engineering reviews.
  • Prepare and manage project budgets and estimates during design development.
  • Oversee the tendering, risk assessment and award recommendation process of sub-trade contracts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Practices strong communication skills and writes routine reports and correspondence.
  • Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Interprets a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Defines problems, collects data, establishes facts and draws valid conclusions.
  • Organizes and manages time, duties, and activities efficiently.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Post secondary degree/diploma in Engineering, Architecture, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Construction Management or related field plus 10+ years experience.
  • Managerial experience is considered an asset.
  • Broad range of past experience working in multiple different contract model environments including design-bid-build, progressive design-build and other integrated forms of agreement.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • E.T, Gold Seal Certification in Estimating and/or Project Management is preferred.
