Scope of Position

 Under the direction of the Manager, Enterprise Risk Management, the Senior Risk Analyst plays a key role in supporting the execution, oversight, implementation, and continuous enhancement of the Enterprise Risk Management program across Alterna Savings and Alterna Bank.

The role contributes to ERM program delivery, risk reporting to Senior Management, the Board and its Committees and the maintenance of related risk frameworks, policies, procedures, and practices.

 The Senior Risk Analyst independently prioritizes multiple assignments and works collaboratively with the ERM team and business partners, demonstrating sound judgment and professionalism in support of organizational objectives.

Major Responsibilities

As second line of defence, the position supports oversight, effective challenge, risk reporting, and continuous enhancement of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) program for both Alterna Savings and Alterna Bank through:

  •  Supports the execution of the Enterprise Risk Management program
  •  Supports the updating and maintenance of ERM frameworks, policies, procedures, and practices through industry and regulatory research, as directed by the Manager, ERM
  •  Oversees and provides organizational support, input and system training to participants, including, but not limited to:
    •  Risk and Control Self-Assessments (RCSAs)
    •  Third Party Risk Assessments (TPRAs)
    •  Incident Management
    •  Model Risk Management
  •  Maintains a strong understanding of Alterna’s business model and structure
  •  Builds strong relationships and trust while providing risk guidance, advisory support, and effective challenge to business partners
  •  Act as a subject-matter expert for Enterprise Risk Management
  •  Participates in the creation of required ERM reporting
  •  Monitors and highlight notable changes in Risk Management KPIs and KRIs
  •  Provides effective challenge as the second line of defence through Alterna’s ERM program
  •  Supports the assessment and monitoring of risks and exposures against the Board-approved Risk Appetite Framework and policies
  •  Performs assessments of the adequacy of the internal control environment and works with business units to improve controls and risk management frameworks, as appropriate
  •  Key contributor for the Risk Management testing programs
  •  Supports the preparation of control-testing reports and works with business unit control owners to develop appropriate action plans for identified issues
  •  Tracks, monitors and validates the remediation of issues identified through control-testing and risk-assessment programs
  •  Contributes to Risk Management Department projects and initiatives

 

Expectation/Outcomes

  •   Successfully support oversight and continuous enhancement of Alterna’s Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) programs.
  •  Implement reporting best practices and improve the quality, clarity, and effectiveness of Risk Management reporting.
  •  Serve as a trusted advisor to Management by providing effective challenge, risk expertise that influence enterprise-level decision-making, risk appetite, and prioritization.
  •  Drive process improvements enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity of the Risk Management function.

 

Educations / Certifications / Experience

  •   University bachelor’s degree in a related field (such as finance or audit)
  •  Minimum of 5 years of experience in Risk Management and/or Internal Audit in the financial industry
  •  Direct Enterprise Risk Management experience is an asset
  •  Prior experience in control testing and/or auditing and reporting is an asset
  •  A professional accreditation/designation in risk management, accounting, internal audit and/or finance or working towards such a designation is an asset
  •  Experience in the financial services industry preferred
  •  Proficient with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

 

Knowledge / Skills

  •   Good knowledge of financial management principles, practices and techniques related to finance and risk management in general, and banking operations and trends in particular
  •  Ability to understand risk management theories and approaches
  •  Knowledge of the Credit Unions and Bank Acts and other relevant legislation is an asset
  •  Strong analytical and creative skills to support the evolution of the ERM program
