What is a senior QA automation engineer?

Senior QA Automation Engineers are experienced professionals responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining automated tests to ensure the quality and reliability of software applications. They lead testing strategies, create automated test scripts, and often mentor junior QA engineers. Their work helps identify bugs early in the development process, reducing manual testing efforts and improving the efficiency of software releases. Senior QA Automation Engineers typically collaborate with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software products.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior QA automation engineer?

To thrive as a Senior QA Automation Engineer, you need strong expertise in software testing methodologies, proficiency in programming/scripting languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with automation frameworks (like Selenium, Cypress, or Appium), CI/CD tools, and version control systems is typically required, along with certifications like ISTQB being advantageous. Excellent problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with development teams and advocate for quality. These competencies ensure efficient test automation, reliable software delivery, and the ability to lead quality initiatives in complex projects.

How does a senior QA automation engineer typically collaborate with development and product teams during the software development lifecycle?

Senior QA Automation Engineers play a vital role in cross-functional teams, working closely with developers and product managers from the early stages of a project. They participate in sprint planning, clarify acceptance criteria, and help design testable features. Throughout the development cycle, they create and maintain automated test scripts, review code, and provide feedback to ensure product quality. Regular communication and collaboration are crucial, as they often lead efforts to integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines and help resolve issues quickly.

Location: Eugene, OR
Compensation: $92,000 - $127,000 / year
Description
Pipeworks Studios is seeking an experienced engineer to join an unannounced AAA project built in Unreal Engine 5. This is a hands-on tools and development-infrastructure role focused on making the game easier to build, test, diagnose, and support.
Responsibilities for this role may include work on crash reporting tools and workflows, diagnostic and support tooling, automated test infrastructure and reporting, Unreal Editor utilities, command-line tools, content or build validation, and other systems that improve the day-to-day effectiveness of developers, QA, production, and support teams.
This role is fully remote with the option for hybrid or in-office work at our office in Eugene, OR and relocation assistance, if preferred.
Day To Day
Responsibilities• Partner with engineering, QA, production, support, and client stakeholders to identify workflow and tooling needs, then turn them into reliable production solutions.
• Design, build, and maintain systems for crash capture and reporting, diagnostic data collection, logging, telemetry, reproduction, and issue triage.
• Build automated testing tools, test orchestration, result analysis, reporting, and continuous integration workflows.
• Create Unreal Editor tools, plugins, cmdlets, scripts, utilities, and validation systems.
• Integrate project tools with source control, build systems, issue tracking, external services, and platform-specific workflows.
• Investigate difficult failures and improve the systems that make future root causes easier to find.
• Write maintainable code, automated tests, documentation, and support materials so tools remain usable across the team.
• Provide accurate time estimates and communicate tradeoffs and risks clearly as project priorities evolve.
• Use approved AI-assisted coding tools within the requirements of the client and project.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Must Haves• Professional experience with UE 5, with the ability to work within a mature Unreal project and existing development workflows.
• Strong C++ and C# experience
• Experience creating internal tools, automation, testing infrastructure, diagnostic systems, developer workflows, or related engineering solutions.
• Strong programming or scripting ability in at least one production language.
• Strong debugging and systems-thinking skills
• The ability to navigate large and unfamiliar codebases.
• Clear written and verbal communication across disciplines.
• Adaptability and comfort learning the tools that best serve a particular project and partner.
• Proficiency with at least one modern AI-assisted coding tool is required (e.g.: OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot). Candidates must be able to effectively direct the tool, critically review and validate generated work, and use it within applicable security and confidentiality requirements.
• Experience with version / source control, code review, issue tracking, and documentation workflows, such as Perforce or Git and Jira or equivalent tools.
Nice-To-Have Skills• Experience with crash reporters, minidumps, symbols, call stacks, log aggregation, telemetry, or production support diagnostics.
• Experience with Unreal automation technologies such as the Automation Test Framework, Gauntlet, BuildGraph, or comparable systems.
• Experience with continuous integration, build farms, test orchestration, or developer productivity infrastructure.
• Experience with Unreal modules, plugins, editor extensions, cmdlets, or engine-level systems.
• Experience shipping on PC or console platforms and supporting cross-platform development workflows.
• Experience with Python, web technologies, Blazor, or service development used to support game-development pipelines.
• Experience with proprietary engines or other commercial game-development environments.
• Experience supporting live games, customer support workflows, or post-launch diagnostics.
Education and Experience• 5+ years of relevant professional engineering experience.
• At least one shipped commercial game, or another substantial production release is preferred.
• A degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field is helpful but not required when equivalent professional experience is demonstrated.
