What does a senior process development engineer do?

A Senior Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, quality, and cost-effectiveness. They often lead teams in scaling up processes from the laboratory to full production, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new technologies or methods. Additionally, they collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production, to ensure processes meet regulatory and safety standards. Their expertise helps companies maintain competitive advantages and meet production goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior process development engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Process Development Engineer, you need a strong background in chemical or mechanical engineering, process optimization, and project management, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, process simulation tools (such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB), and Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing certifications is often required. Excellent problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills help you coordinate cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for developing efficient, scalable processes that meet quality standards and business goals.

What are some common challenges a senior process development engineer may face when scaling up a new process from the lab to full production?

Senior Process Development Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining product quality and consistency when transitioning from small-scale laboratory experiments to large-scale manufacturing. This process typically involves troubleshooting equipment limitations, optimizing process parameters, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as R&D, manufacturing, and quality assurance, is crucial to address these challenges and achieve a smooth scale-up. Adaptability and problem-solving skills are essential to navigate unexpected issues that may arise during this transition.

Job description

We are representing a leader in the precision manufacturing sector, specializing in high-performance components for the aerospace, defense, and commercial markets. Our client is seeking a dedicated Process Engineer to join their team in the Temecula area. This role is a key technical position reporting directly to executive leadership, focused on optimizing complex manufacturing processes in a high-precision environment.
In this position, the successful candidate will lead efforts to develop, validate, and sustain manufacturing processes for advanced optical and metallic components. You will be instrumental in driving yield improvements, conducting root cause analysis, and implementing best practices that directly impact product quality and operational throughput.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Process Development & Validation: Lead the validation of new and existing manufacturing processes; create and maintain SOPs, control plans, and process specifications.
  • Operational Optimization: Analyze production data and metrics to identify opportunities for cost reduction, yield improvement, and throughput enhancement.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Utilize structured methodologies to investigate process deviations, nonconformances, and quality concerns.
  • Technical Collaboration: Provide guidance to cross-functional teams, including Quality and Production, and ensure compliance with stringent industry and regulatory standards.
  • Technology Implementation: Evaluate and integrate new equipment, materials, and process controls to maintain a competitive edge in manufacturing capabilities.
Required Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical, Materials, Chemical, or Manufacturing Engineering (or a closely related discipline).
  • Experience: 5-7 years of experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong background in metallurgy and materials science. Experience with vacuum coating, electroforming, plating, thin-film deposition, or precision finishing processes is highly preferred.
  • Analytical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency with Statistical Process Control (SPC), process capability analysis, and Lean/Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Documentation: Proven ability to create engineering documentation and technical reports; proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and GD&T.
  • Compliance: Due to the nature of the industry and the sensitive information involved, this role requires the candidate to be a U.S. Person (U.S. Citizen, Green Card Holder, or equivalent as defined by ITAR).
Why Apply?
This is a high-visibility role within an established firm that values technical expertise and process innovation. The position offers the opportunity to influence manufacturing strategy, lead continuous improvement projects, and work with sophisticated technologies in a fast-paced environment.
