Senior Power Electronics Engineers typically have more experience, take on leadership roles in projects, and handle complex design tasks. Power Electronics Engineers are often earlier in their careers, focusing on design and development. The senior role involves greater responsibility and expertise, but both roles share similar educational backgrounds and work environments.

What does a Senior Power Electronics Engineer do?

A Senior Power Electronics Engineer designs, develops, and tests electronic systems and components that control and convert electrical power efficiently. They often lead projects involving power supplies, converters, inverters, and motor drives for various applications like renewable energy, automotive, or industrial systems. In addition to hands-on engineering, they may mentor junior engineers, ensure compliance with industry standards, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative power solutions. Their expertise helps optimize reliability, performance, and energy efficiency in electrical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, power conversion, and circuit design, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering. Expertise in simulation tools like SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications such as IPC or IEEE are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for leading teams and collaborating on complex projects. These competencies ensure reliable, innovative solutions in power electronics, driving efficiency and success in advanced engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Senior Power Electronics Engineers, and how can they be addressed within a project team?

Senior Power Electronics Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing thermal performance, ensuring EMI/EMC compliance, and optimizing circuit efficiency for high-power applications. These challenges are typically addressed by collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including mechanical engineers, PCB designers, and firmware developers—to iterate on prototypes and run thorough simulations and testing. Regular design reviews and open communication channels within the team are key to identifying potential issues early and finding innovative solutions. Staying updated with the latest industry standards and leveraging the collective expertise of the team also play important roles in overcoming technical hurdles.

Job description

At Hitachi Energy, we’re not just building systems—we’re powering the future. As a Senior Lead Project Engineer in our Power Conversion Systems (PCS) group, you’ll be at the heart of the energy transition, leading technical execution for cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), renewable integration, and data center applications. This role offers the chance to work on high-impact projects that span remote microgrids, grid-scale storage, and commercial energy systems.

You’ll be the technical anchor for projects of medium to high complexity, guiding design, engineering, and delivery from concept to commissioning. Whether it’s shaping SCADA systems, optimizing inverter-based controls, or collaborating with supply chain and customers, your work will directly influence how energy is generated, stored, and distributed.

This is more than a job—it’s a mission. You’ll join a team of innovators and problem-solvers who thrive on collaboration, continuous improvement, and delivering solutions that matter. If you’re ready to lead with purpose, grow your expertise, and help shape a more sustainable grid, Hitachi Energy is where your impact begins.

How You’ll Make an Impact

  • Lead technical execution of BESS and renewable energy projects hand-in-hand with project management
  • Review and approve design deliverables and project documentation.
  • Define control system narratives and SCADA configurations for energy applications.
  • Support proposal development and respond to RFIs and RFPs.
  • Collaborate with supply chain to evaluate and approve technical solutions.
  • Manage project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Interface with customers to deliver tailored engineering solutions.
  • Share technical knowledge and support internal training and testing.
  • Responsible to ensure compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.

Your Background

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and 5+ years of experience in power systems, energy storage, or power electronics; or
  • Master’s degree in engineering and 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with SCADA systems and automation protocols (Modbus, DNP).
  • Strong technical aptitude in electrical engineering and industrial software.
  • Familiarity with renewable and thermal generation technologies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Candidate must already have work authorization that would permit them to work for Hitachi Energy in the United States.
