Description
Development Metallurgical Engineer
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Purpose: Provide metallurgical engineering expertise to support supplier development, product development, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain initiatives. This role is responsible for driving process compliance, reducing manufacturing risk, developing material and process standards, and conducting supplier and internal process audits. The Development Metallurgical Engineer serves as a key technical resource to ensure materials, heat treatments, and manufacturing processes consistently meet TEAM Industries requirements and industry standards.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Ensure a safe work environment for self and others. Follows all safety rules and regulations. Demonstrate commitment to safety program.
  • Develop, maintain, and execute heat treatment revalidation programs for internal operations and external suppliers.
  • Conduct audits of heat treatment and metallurgical processes to verify compliance with customer, industry, and TEAM requirements.
  • Create, revise, and maintain TEAM standards related to material specifications, heat treatment, welding, and other metallurgical processes.
  • Serve as a technical resource for multiple departments by utilizing the capabilities and expertise of the Corporate Metallurgical Laboratory (CML).
    • Supply Chain:
      • Participate in the evaluation, qualification, and selection of new suppliers
      • Conduct Minimum Process Reviews (MPRs) and process audits to assess supplier capabilities and compliance
      • Develop and maintain quarterly sample submission schedules for offshore suppliers.
      • Review, analyze, and communicate test results to verify compliance with specifications and identify areas of risk or improvement.
    • Product Development:
      • Collaborate with Engineers and Project Managers to recommend appropriate material grades, heat treatments, and industry standards for new and existing products.
      • Develop new TEAM material and process standards where industry specifications do not adequately define requirements.
      • Support engineering deviation requests by providing metallurgical expertise, laboratory testing, and technical evaluations to assess potential impacts.
    • Quality Departments:
      • Support quality initiatives through metallurgical evaluations, testing, and technical guidance.
      • Monitor internal heat treatment equipment performance through revalidation programs, trend analysis, and capability assessments.
      • Identify process risks, maintenance requirements, and opportunities for improvement while providing technical training as needed.
      • Perform spectrometer analysis and support TEAM Ramos Die Casting operations through material evaluation and trend analysis.
      • Reduce manufacturing risk by identifying material, process, and test result trends that may impact product quality or performance
  • Demonstrate leadership commitment to the TEAM Industries Quality Management System and Objectives
  • Promote a positive atmosphere. Actively support activities that promote the welfare and morale of TEAM employees.
  • Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.

Requirements
Minimum Requirements:Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; Metallurgical Engineering or Materials Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-10 years of experience in steel heat treatment, manufacturing, and metallurgical laboratory testing.
  • Experience in aluminum or iron foundry operations is preferred.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficient in the operation, maintenance, and training of personnel on metallurgical laboratory equipment, including:
    • Metallurgical saws and band saws
    • Rockwell, Brinell, and Vickers hardness testing equipment
    • Mounting, grinding, and polishing equipment
    • Optical microscopes and vision systems
    • Image analysis software and related laboratory tools
  • Extensive knowledge of heat treatment processes including:
    • Atmospheric carburizing
    • Ferritic nitrocarburizing
    • Induction hardening
    • Normalizing steel
    • Aluminum T4 and T6 heat treatment processes
  • Knowledge of CQI-9 heat treatment system assessments and audit requirements
  • Understanding of casting and forging processes, including:
    • Die Casting
    • Green sand casting
    • Permanent mold casting
    • Investment casting
    • Steel and aluminum forgings
  • Knowledge of secondary manufacturing processes including:
    • Electroplating
    • Anodizing
    • Phosphating
    • Painting
    • Powder coating
  • Basic understanding of arc welding processes and related metallurgical evaluations used during new product development.
  • Knowledge of steel and aluminum alloy chemistry and material selection for engineering applications.
  • Ability to interpret and evaluate steel, aluminum, and iron microstructures.
  • Experience conducting failure analysis investigations and root cause evaluations.
  • Working knowledge of Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) and Liquid Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) methods.
  • Ability to develop, revise, and maintain technical material and process specifications.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills, including the ability to review and prepare technical reports and papers.
  • Effective leadership, analytical thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
