Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.

POSITION SUMMARY

CVS Health is seeking a Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer to join our Enterprise Infrastructure organization. The Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer will serve as a critical technical leader responsible for ensuring the performance, scalability, reliability, and efficiency of our enterprise mainframe environment supporting mission-critical healthcare, pharmacy, and retail applications. As a Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer, you will play a key role in capacity planning, workload analysis, performance engineering, and infrastructure optimization across one of the nation's largest and most complex mainframe ecosystems. This position is responsible for proactively monitoring shared mainframe resources, evaluating system utilization trends, identifying performance risks, and providing actionable recommendations to improve overall system health and operational efficiency.

The Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer will partner closely with Application Development, Mainframe Systems Programming, Infrastructure Engineering, Architecture, Database Administration, Operations, and Business teams to analyze workload behavior, assess resource consumption, identify top consumers, and optimize application performance. This role requires deep expertise in z/OS performance analysis, capacity forecasting, workload management, and real‑time diagnostic troubleshooting to support critical business services and maintain enterprise service levels. In addition, the Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer will lead strategic capacity planning initiatives by evaluating current and future infrastructure requirements, conducting trend analysis, developing growth forecasts, and supporting long‑range planning efforts. The role will be instrumental in driving MIPS reduction initiatives, maximizing platform efficiency, and identifying opportunities to improve infrastructure utilization while controlling operational costs.

The Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer will also support performance testing, design reviews, quality assurance activities, infrastructure upgrades, and technology modernization initiatives. This individual will provide expert guidance during major business events, including Open Enrollment, Welcome Season, and other high‑volume processing periods, ensuring the mainframe platform remains resilient, performant, and capable of meeting evolving business demands. Success in this role requires exceptional technical expertise, analytical thinking, problem‑solving capabilities, and strong interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate is a highly collaborative performance engineering professional who thrives in a complex enterprise environment, works effectively across multiple teams and time zones, and can translate technical findings into meaningful business recommendations. This position includes participation in an on‑call rotation and requires the ability to provide real‑time application and system performance support during production incidents, performance degradations, and critical business events.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as the primary Senior Mainframe Capacity & Performance Engineer responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing enterprise mainframe resource utilization, performance, and capacity across IBM z/OS environments.
  • Conduct capacity planning, forecasting, trend analysis, and real‑time performance diagnostics to identify bottlenecks, mitigate risks, and ensure platform scalability and reliability.
  • Partner with application, infrastructure, database, and systems programming teams to identify high‑resource consumers, troubleshoot performance issues, and implement optimization strategies that improve efficiency and reduce MIPS consumption.
  • Develop and deliver utilization reports, performance assessments, and capacity recommendations to support infrastructure investments, application initiatives, technology upgrades, and peak‑business readiness activities such as Open Enrollment and Welcome Season.
  • Provide technical leadership for performance engineering activities including testing, quality assurance reviews, production support, critical incident response, and participation in an on‑call rotation supporting enterprise application performance.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5+ years supporting enterprise IBM mainframe environments, including z/OS and IBM Z architecture.
  • 5+ years in capacity planning, performance engineering, root cause analysis, and production troubleshooting within large‑scale environments.
  • 3+ years analyzing utilization trends, forecasting capacity needs, and driving workload optimization initiatives.
  • 3+ years leveraging enterprise mainframe monitoring and performance management tools to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
  • 2+ years utilizing Microsoft Office applications, including advanced Excel reporting and data analysis.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting and tuning critical mainframe subsystems, including DB2, CICS, and/or MQ.
  • Proficiency with performance and capacity management tools such as OMEGAMON, RMF III, SAS, and MXG.
  • Knowledge of capacity forecasting, workload management, and performance optimization methodologies within enterprise environments.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and collaboration capabilities, with a demonstrated ability to partner effectively across cross‑functional and geographically distributed teams.
