Age should not be a barrier to senior-level roles if the individual has the necessary experience and competencies.

In what grade is senior?

The term 'Senior' in the job title Senior Mine Planning Engineer typically indicates a higher level of experience and responsibility within the engineering hierarchy. It generally corresponds to mid- to senior-level positions, often requiring several years of relevant experience, advanced skills in mine planning software, and possibly professional certifications such as a PE or equivalent. Grade classifications can vary by company but usually reflect a senior or lead level in the organizational structure.

How does a Senior Mine Planning Engineer typically collaborate with other departments during project development?

A Senior Mine Planning Engineer works closely with geologists, surveyors, environmental specialists, and operations teams to develop and optimize mine plans. This collaboration ensures that plans are both technically feasible and aligned with safety, environmental, and production goals. Regular cross-functional meetings and data sharing are vital, as input from multiple departments is necessary to address design constraints, resource estimation, and compliance requirements. Effective communication and teamwork are key to delivering successful, sustainable mining projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Mine Planning Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Mine Planning Engineer, you need an engineering degree (typically in mining engineering), deep knowledge of mine design, and extensive experience with resource estimation and production planning. Proficiency in technical tools such as Surpac, Vulcan, or Datamine, and familiarity with mine scheduling software are usually required, along with relevant certifications like a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Strong analytical thinking, leadership, and effective communication skills set exceptional professionals apart by enabling collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are critical to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining operations while meeting regulatory and organizational goals.

Job description

About Jerritt Canyon

The Jerritt Canyon deposit was discovered in 1972, and the first gold production from the property occurred in 1981. The Jerritt Canyon property contains 30,821 hectares of mining claims located in the mining-friendly state of Nevada. First Majestic acquired the Jerritt Canyon Gold Mine from Sprott Mining Inc. on April 30, 2021. In May 2023, operations were suspended to prioritize exploration and technical studies. Jerritt Canyon is now entering a new phase of evaluation and planning, requiring substantial technical support to advance the work necessary for a potential future restart of operations.

The Opportunity

The Senior Mining Engineer plays a key technical leadership role in supporting underground mine planning, design, and operational optimization at Jerritt Canyon. This position partners closely with Technical Services, Operations, and Geology teams to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining plans that support both near-term execution and longer-term strategic objectives.

This role requires a strong safety mindset, advanced technical expertise, and the ability to influence cross-functional teams while driving continuous improvement initiatives in a dynamic and evolving operational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support underground mine planning activities, including design, sequencing, scheduling, and optimization of mining operations.
  • Partner with the Operations and Geology teams to develop integrated mine plans aligned with production targets and business objectives.
  • Provide technical leadership in drill and blast design, stope design, and underground sequencing to optimize safety, productivity, and cost performance.
  • Support and contribute to life-of-mine (LOM), long-term, and short-term planning processes, including forecasting, budgeting, and progress tracking.
  • Maintain and actively manage a register of mine planning risks and opportunities, identifying mitigation strategies and value improvement initiatives.
  • Lead or contribute to technical studies and projects, including AFE development, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies, and capital project evaluations.
  • Analyze current mining practices and recommend improvements to enhance operational efficiency, productivity, and cost effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement systems, processes, and best practices to improve planning accuracy, reporting, and operational execution.
  • Support budget development and tracking, including cost forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, plans, and recommendations to site leadership and stakeholders.
  • Ensure all engineering deliverables meet required standards and are fit for purpose to support safe and effective operations.
  • Foster strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including operations personnel and contractors.
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities across mine planning, design, and execution.

The above responsibilities are representative and may not include all assigned duties.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • 5-10+ years of progressive experience in underground mining engineering, with strong exposure to mine planning, design, and operations.
  • Experience in conventional underground hard rock mining, preferably in gold operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, and economic evaluation.
  • Proficiency in mine planning and design software, with experience applying optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge of resource estimation, mineral inventory, and exploration methods is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in complex, multi-mine or multi-process environments preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and 3D visualization skills, with the ability to evaluate technical data and develop sound recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong commitment to safety, health, and environmental standards.
