What does a Senior Millwork Engineer do?

A Senior Millwork Engineer is responsible for designing, engineering, and overseeing the production of custom architectural woodwork and cabinetry. They create detailed technical drawings, select appropriate materials, and collaborate with architects, designers, and production teams to ensure projects meet specifications and quality standards. Additionally, they often supervise junior engineers, resolve technical issues during manufacturing, and ensure compliance with industry codes and regulations.

How does a Senior Millwork Engineer typically collaborate with project managers and architects during custom fabrication projects?

A Senior Millwork Engineer plays a key role in bridging the gap between design intent and manufacturable solutions. They work closely with project managers to ensure that project timelines, budgets, and technical requirements are met, while also collaborating with architects to clarify design specifications and resolve potential constructability issues. Regular coordination meetings and shop drawing reviews are common, helping to streamline the approval process and address any design changes promptly. This collaborative approach ensures a smooth workflow from concept through installation, making strong communication skills essential in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Millwork Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Millwork Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of millwork design, construction methods, and material selection, usually backed by a degree in engineering or architecture and several years of industry experience. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), project management systems, and familiarity with woodworking machinery are typically required.
