What is the difference between Senior Midstream Engineer vs Midstream Engineer?

AspectSenior Midstream EngineerMidstream Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, 5+ years experience, professional engineering license often preferredBachelor's degree in engineering or related field, 2-4 years experience
Work EnvironmentDesign, oversee, and optimize midstream infrastructure like pipelines and processing facilitiesAssist in project execution, monitoring operations, and supporting midstream projects
Employer & Industry UsageOil & gas companies, energy firms, pipeline operatorsMidstream sector within oil & gas, utility companies, engineering firms

The main difference between a Senior Midstream Engineer and a Midstream Engineer lies in experience, responsibilities, and expertise. Senior Midstream Engineers typically have more years of experience, hold advanced certifications, and lead complex projects. Midstream Engineers are often in earlier career stages, supporting and executing project tasks under supervision. Both roles are vital in the midstream sector, but the senior position involves greater oversight and strategic planning.

What does a Senior Midstream Engineer do?

A Senior Midstream Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and managing facilities and pipelines that transport oil, natural gas, and other products between production sites and refineries or distribution centers. They oversee the safe and efficient operation of pipelines, compressor stations, and storage facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Additionally, they may lead project teams, conduct risk assessments, and implement new technologies to optimize midstream operations. Their expertise helps minimize environmental impact and maximize the reliability and profitability of energy transportation systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Midstream Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Midstream Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical, chemical, or petroleum engineering, with substantial experience in pipeline, storage, or transportation projects and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as AutoCAD, Aspen HYSYS, and pipeline integrity management systems is common, along with knowledge of regulatory standards. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills for managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects. These competencies ensure safe, efficient, and compliant midstream operations critical to energy infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Midstream Engineers when managing multiple pipeline projects simultaneously?

Senior Midstream Engineers often juggle several projects at different stages, which can present challenges such as coordinating multidisciplinary teams, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining project timelines. Balancing technical design with cost and safety considerations requires strong project management and communication skills. Additionally, adapting quickly to changing field conditions or unexpected issues—like environmental constraints or supply chain delays—is a regular part of the role.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology
  • 10+ years of professional electrical engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required (or actively in the process of obtaining)
  • Strong working knowledge of IEEE standards, API guidelines, and NFPA 70 (NEC)
  • Familiarity with additional NFPA codes including NFPA 101, 407, 497, and 780; IBC familiarity a plus
  • Proven experience leading electrical design for fueling systems, oil & gas facilities, industrial plants, or energy infrastructure projects
  • Proficiency with industry-standard tools including AutoCAD, ETAP, SKM, and applicable vendor software
  • Experience preparing and reviewing electrical construction drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical narratives
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Electrical CAD Designers and multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing directly with clients, plant engineers, operators, and contractors
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Key Responsibilities
  • Technical Leadership & Design
    • Lead and support electrical design for fuel terminals, LNG facilities, oil & gas midstream systems, compression stations, and aviation fueling systems
    • Develop and review low- and medium-voltage power distribution systems, grounding and bonding, lighting, motor control, heat trace, and standby power systems
    • Perform hazardous area classification reviews and ensure compliant equipment selection, wiring methods, and documentation
    • Apply applicable codes, standards, and client requirements to deliver compliant, constructible designs
    • Prepare, review, and seal (as applicable) construction drawings, specifications, engineering calculations, and design narratives
  • Analysis & Documentation
    • Produce and/or review electrical studies including load flow, short circuit, coordination, arc flash, voltage drop, conductor sizing, and grounding
    • Develop and review one-line diagrams, panel schedules, load lists, conduit and cable schedules, equipment layouts, and installation details
  • Coordination & Execution
    • Coordinate electrical scope with mechanical, civil, structural, and I&C disciplines to ensure scope alignment and constructability
    • Support controls and instrumentation interfaces, including PLC I/O diagrams, SCADA coordination, EFSO/ESD systems, and motor starting methods (VFDs, soft starters, MCCs)
    • Review vendor submittals, packaged skid systems, and hazardous-rated electrical equipment
    • Participate in design reviews, constructability reviews, and technical coordination meetings
  • Construction & Client Support
    • Support construction activities including RFIs, submittal reviews, site visits, field verifications, and commissioning support
    • Serve as a technical point of contact for clients and project stakeholders
  • Mentorship & Business Support
    • Provide technical guidance, redlines, and direction to Electrical CAD Designers to ensure accurate and efficient drawing production
    • Mentor junior engineers and designers, supporting technical development and knowledge transfer
    • Assist with proposal development, technical approaches, project planning, and client presentations as required

All Pond & Company positions require participation in at least one in-person interview as part of our hiring process, and most roles also require in-person onboarding at a Pond office location; candidates should expect to meet directly with our team and should be cautious of any communication suggesting otherwise.
