What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of mechanical design, engineering principles, and problem-solving, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in mechanical engineering and professional licensure (PE). Expertise in CAD software, FEA tools, and industry-standard project management systems is essential. Strong leadership, effective communication, and project management skills help you guide teams and collaborate across disciplines. These skills ensure innovative, efficient, and reliable engineering solutions while driving project success and team performance.

How does a Senior Mechanical Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will regularly work alongside teams from electrical engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, and project management. This collaboration often involves participating in design reviews, coordinating timelines, and resolving integration challenges to ensure all components fit and function together seamlessly. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you'll be expected to provide technical guidance and ensure that design decisions align with broader project goals. This cross-functional interaction not only ensures the success of the project but also provides opportunities to broaden your expertise and leadership skills.

What does a Senior Mechanical Engineer do?

A Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and overseeing the production of mechanical systems and components. They lead engineering projects, provide technical guidance to junior engineers, and ensure that designs meet safety, efficiency, and quality standards. These professionals often collaborate with other engineering disciplines, manage project timelines, and troubleshoot complex technical issues. Their work may span industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, or energy, depending on the employer.

What is the difference between Senior Mechanical Engineering vs Mechanical Engineering?

Job description

SMC is actively looking for a Senior Level Mechanical Engineer based in the Fargo, ND area to provide regular oversight of large-scale data center construction projects throughout the Dakotas, including coordination with trade partners, RFI resolution, submittal and shop drawing review, and coordination with in-office design team members who will be making required drawing updates and assisting with construction administration remotely. ย

The ideal candidate is a self-starter, comfortable working autonomously in high pressure construction environments and has excellent communication skills including conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving.ย

This engagement is for an initial 1-year term with potential to extend to approximately 30-months. Opportunities for transfer within SMC to other jobsite and/or office locations, as well as different roles are available after the term of the on-site engagement for candidates who qualify. Qualified consulting engineers will have the opportunity to remain with SMC (at the company's sole discretion) in a remote role once the on-site portion of the engagement is completed.ย

RESPONSIBILITIESย

This candidate will oversee the successful execution of SMC's design work in an on-site environment, working and coordinating closely with contractors, clients, and design partners from all disciplines. ย  This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines including high priority RFI and submittal reviews. ย ย

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:ย

A typical week will consist of visiting one or more facilities under construction across one or two campuses, rotating between campuses from week to week to suit construction priorities. Days not spent on a job site will be spent working remotely to support construction administration activities such as submittal and RFI review, or working with the remainder of the design team on preparation of drawing packages, bulletins, etc.ย
  • Conduct regular job walks of in-progress construction, identify deviations from the contract documents at the earliest possible stage to permit speedy remediation, and be available to review conflicts and questions from contractors on a daily basis.ย
  • Complete partial and building punch walks in accordance with the contractor's construction schedule.
  • Be intimately familiar with the commissioning process including typical 5-level commissioning, review of scripts and resulting reports, and NETA testing practices.
  • Participate in level 4 and 5 commissioning as a representative of SMC and our client.
  • Coordinate with all internal and external disciplines as required for RFI resolution, submittal, and shop drawing review.
  • Spot check contractor redline drawings, and equipment settings for accuracy and completeness.
  • Perform and review airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems.
  • Produce and understand hydronic & airflow flow diagrams.
  • Select and specify HVAC equipment.
  • Understand and be capable of creating detailed sequences of operations (SOO) for the mechanical systems they design.
