To thrive as a Senior Mainframe Developer, you need deep expertise in mainframe programming languages (like COBOL, JCL, and PL/I), systems analysis, and a strong understanding of legacy application architectures, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools such as IBM z/OS, DB2, CICS, and version control systems is essential, along with relevant certifications like IBM Certified System Programmer. Job description

Partner with a company that's devoted to shaping the future of infrastructure in financial services. Let's collaborate to explore uncharted territories and achieve extraordinary feats together.

As a Senior Director of Infrastructure Engineering  in the Mainframe and Midrange Compute team at JPMorganChase, you will lead Advanced Capabilities Engineering for the firm's Mainframe and Midrange Compute platforms. This role is responsible for defining and executing the strategy for applying artificial intelligence-particularly agentic and automation-driven solutions-to transform how core compute platforms are managed, operated, and governed.

You will establish and lead a centralized Advanced Capabilities Engineering function, consolidating existing AI initiatives into a cohesive portfolio with clear architecture, controls, and delivery outcomes. The focus of this role is on using AI to automate and optimize system management activities (e.g., operations, reliability, remediation, and decision support), not rewriting application workloads such as COBOL or PL/I. This is a senior leadership role requiring strong technical judgment, experience operating in highly controlled environments, and the ability to influence across a complex, matrixed organization.

Job responsibilities

  • Define and own the AI strategy for Mainframe and Midrange systems management, including the identification, prioritization, and governance of advanced capabilities and intelligent automation initiatives.
  • Build, lead, and scale an Advanced Capabilities Engineering team, bringing together existing innovators and establishing consistent engineering standards, operating models, and delivery discipline.
  • Lead the design, implementation, and ongoing oversight of agentic AI solutions that automate manual or repetitive infrastructure management tasks while adhering to firmwide risk, security, and control requirements.
  • Partner with operations, SRE, architecture, risk, and control functions to ensure AI capabilities are implemented safely, transparently, and in alignment with JPMorganChase policies and regulatory expectations.
  • Establish and manage the roadmap for AI adoption across Mainframe and Midrange platforms, including vendor partnerships, tooling strategy, and internal capability development.
  • Provide seniorlevel stakeholder management, communicating strategy, progress, and risk clearly to executive leaders across Infrastructure Platforms and Technology.
  • Ensure platforms meet resiliency, scalability, performance, and security objectives, with AI solutions enhancing service reliability and operational effectiveness rather than introducing unmanaged risk.
  • Develop and execute organizational objectives with clear accountability for outcomes, including staffing plans, budget oversight, and delivery commitments.
  • Mentor and develop senior engineers and emerging leaders, building sustainable technical leadership depth within the organization.
  • Champion JPMorganChase values, including a culture of inclusion, accountability, disciplined execution, and continuous improvement.

Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Formal training or certification , with 10+ years of hands-on experience in enterprise infrastructure environments.
  • Advanced experience applying AI and automation to infrastructure operations, including agentic or decisiondriven systems.
  • 5+ years of senior leadership experience managing technologists responsible for complex, missioncritical platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience leading large, crossfunctional engineering organizations within infrastructure or platform engineering.
  • Proven ability to influence across highly matrixed organizations and deliver outcomes at scale in regulated enterprise environments.
  • Experience leading large, complex initiatives spanning infrastructure design, operational resilience, scalability, and system performance.
  • Strong background in talent development, including hiring, mentoring, and succession planning.
  • Experience owning and managing budgets and strategic investment decisions.

Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills

  • Knowledge of Mainframe and Midrange automation, operational tooling, and platform management practices.
  • Track record implementing or partnering on SRE concepts, reliability engineering, and operational efficiency improvements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead organizations through significant transformation, balancing innovation with risk and control obligations.
  • Experience in financial services or similarly regulated industries, with a strong understanding of governance, controls, and audit expectations.
