Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mainframe Programmer to join a stable and highly respected organization supporting critical enterprise business operations. This role is responsible for the design, development, enhancement, and maintenance of complex mainframe applications within a large-scale production environment. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in legacy mainframe technologies along with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams to deliver high-quality software solutions.
The Senior Mainframe Programmer will play a key role in developing new applications, enhancing existing systems, troubleshooting issues, and supporting ongoing modernization and optimization efforts. This individual will work closely with stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions while ensuring system reliability, maintainability, and compliance with development standards.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with long-term stability, strong leadership support, and meaningful enterprise-level projects.
Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, test, implement, and maintain complex mainframe applications
  • Enhance and support existing enterprise systems within a high-volume production environment
  • Perform development using COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO, and z/OS technologies
  • Collaborate with technical teams and business stakeholders to define and translate system requirements
  • Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including analysis, coding, testing, deployment, and support
  • Create and maintain technical documentation and development standards
  • Troubleshoot application issues and support performance optimization initiatives
  • Evaluate and recommend software tools and technologies that improve operational efficiency
  • Ensure development activities align with business priorities, timelines, and quality standards, performance optimization, and issue resolution
Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
  • 5+ years of professional mainframe development experience
  • Strong experience with COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, TSO, and z/OS
  • Knowledge of Agile development methodologies such as Scrum or Kanban
  • Experience with Azure DevOps, Jira, Rally, or similar lifecycle management tools
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience with DB2, XML, SQL, and Visual Studio
  • Insurance industry experience
  • Project management experience
  • Experience supporting enterprise modernization or legacy system enhancement initiatives

The Pay Rate range for this position is $50 - $67 per hour, excluding benefits. Your final Pay Rate will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location, and internal pay equity. Please note, hiring at the top of the range is uncommon to allow room for future salary growth.
