The Law Offices of Heywood G. Friedman is a premier California firm practicing in the areas of workers’ compensation defense and insurance defense. This position is in our firm’s Lien Department (known by our clients as the “Lien Machine”), dedicated to resolving outstanding liens on workers’ compensation claims.
Successful candidates for this position will have the choice of working remotely or in person at one of our five office locations throughout California (however, you will appear in person for lien conferences, court appearances, meetings, etc. as professionally required). The expected compensation range for this position is $28–$45 per hour. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors as permitted by law.
Key Responsibilities:1. Resolve liens on employment-related workers’ compensation claims
2. Maintain case files
3. Draft and prepare initial reports, hearing reports, status reports, and closing reports
4. Appear in person for hearings before the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB)
5. Collaborate with F+B attorneys and professional staff on optimal lien resolution strategies
6. E-file settlement documents (Stipulations, Compromise & Release, etc.) via EAMS for Award or Order Approving
7. Maintain consistent client communication
Required Qualifications:1. Experience in lien resolution
2. Ability to calculate fee schedule of bills
3. Ability to analyze case files to identify applicable defenses to liens
4. Experience appearing before the WCAB for lien hearings, walk-throughs, etc.
5. Strong negotiation skills
6. Strong client communication skills
7. Strong organizational skills
8. Ability to make billable hours quota
9. Ability to work in a paperless environment
Preferred Qualifications:1. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel)
2. Proficiency in legal practice management software such as MerusCase, Tabs3, etc.
3. Prior professional experience at a California workers' compensation defense firm
4. Knowledge of California's workers' compensation laws, systems, and procedures
5. Proficiency in EAMS
6. Proficiency in FileNet
7. Knowledge of the Medicare set-aside process
