Position Summary
The Digital Innovation Engineer III is a senior-level technical leader within the Digital Innovation & Engineering department, responsible for spearheading complex digital development initiatives and advancing imaging and analytical workflows with the organization. Acting as a subject matter expert in key digital pathology platforms and systems, this role operates with significant autonomy and is frequently tasked with managing multifaceted projects, identifying areas for optimization, and leading the integration of emerging technologies, tools, and developments related to digital pathology. In addition to driving innovation and ensuring data integrity, the Digital Innovation Engineer III works cross-functionally to deliver scalable, high-impact solutions that support research and development objectives. This role also plays a vital role in mentoring peers, shaping technical standards, and promoting best practices across the department.
What you'll work on...
Job Responsibilities
  • Lead complex digital innovation and development initiatives, including multi-stakeholder projects involving slide scanning, image analysis, workflow automation, and validation.
  • Serve as the technical lead and subject matter expert for digital imaging platforms, annotation pipelines, and algorithm development and validation.
  • Design, architect and continuously optimize advanced image processing and analysis workflows to support scientific, operational and clinical objectives.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives such as the evaluation and implementation of new systems, development of custom solutions, or deployment of digital platforms.
  • Drive and/or oversee validation studies for image analysis tools, scan configurations, software updates, and AI/ML-driven algorithms to ensure accuracy, reproducibility, and compliance.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve technical challenges using root cause analysis and collaborative problem solving across departments.
  • Promote continuous improvement through the standardization of digital processes, documentation practices, and quality control frameworks.
  • Mentor and support the professional development of junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented team environment.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including R&D, Quality, Pathology, IT, to ensure technical execution algins with organizational goals and priorities.
  • Prepare high-quality documentation including validation protocols, technical reports, SOPs, and records supporting regulatory and operational needs.
  • Contribute to the development of internal training materials, knowledge-sharing initiatives, and the enhancement of digital capabilities across the organization.
  • Perform other responsibilities and special assignments as directed.

What you'll need...
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • 7+ years of experience in digital imaging, pathology workflows, biomedical tool development, or a closely related field.
  • Proven track record of technical or operational leadership, including ownership of complex projects or programs.
  • Expert-level understanding of digital imaging platforms, image analysis workflows, and associated quality control methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, including multi-disciplinary validation studies and technology implementations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with excellent organizational and communication capabilities.
  • Extensive experience authoring and maintaining technical documentation for internal use and/or regulatory compliance.
  • Adept at navigating scientific, technical, and business environments with cross-functional collaboration.
  • Experience mentoring or managing technical staff, fostering growth and skill development.
  • Working knowledge of regulated environments such as CLIA, CAP, FDA, MDR/IVD.
  • Proficiency with algorithm development, machine learning tools, or digital imaging pipelines.
  • Experience engaging with external vendors, academic collaborators, or regulatory agencies.
  • Familiarity with strategic planning processes, including technical roadmapping, resource planning, and budgeting.

Education, Certifications, and Licensures
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in biomedical engineering, computer science, life sciences, or related discipline
  • PhD strongly preferred.
