What are Senior Infrastructure Engineers?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing an organization’s core technology infrastructure. This includes servers, networks, cloud environments, and related systems that support business operations. They often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of the infrastructure. In addition to technical expertise, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to align technology with business goals.

What is the difference between Senior Infrastructure Engineer vs Network Engineer?

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications, Senior Infrastructure Engineers focus on overall infrastructure design and cloud integration, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network hardware and connectivity. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is broader, often overseeing multiple systems, while Network Engineers concentrate on network-specific tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in network architecture, server management, cloud platforms, and a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is typical in this role. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership, and effective communication help you manage complex projects and collaborate across teams. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and scalable IT environments that support organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by Senior Infrastructure Engineers when supporting large-scale systems?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability of systems, managing complex migrations, and optimizing performance under heavy workloads. Coordinating with development and security teams is essential to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting services. Additionally, staying ahead of evolving technologies and automating routine tasks can be demanding but crucial for efficiency and scalability. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and effective cross-team communication.

Job description

At Atom Computing, we build quantum computers using arrays of optically trapped neutral atoms that will empower customers to achieve unprecedented computational breakthroughs. Join a world-class team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals to advance the state-of-the-art in quantum computing.

Atom Computing is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to enhance our software development workflows and maintain the critical infrastructure that powers our quantum computer. In this role, you’ll work across the entire stack, enabling engineers and physicists to seamlessly deploy software and operate the system with reliability and efficiency. Our environment combines both on-premises and cloud infrastructure, requiring innovative approaches to managing and scaling each. You'll collaborate closely with a talented, tight-knit team of engineers and physicists, reporting to the Software Engineering Manager.

Due to the mix of on-prem and cloud infrastructure, this role is required to be in the office in Boulder at least 3 days per week.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Administer and maintain a fleet of on-premise Linux servers (and a few Windows VMs) to ensure reliable and performant operation of the quantum computing environment.
  • Design and implement automated workflows for managing and scaling cloud and on-premise infrastructure.
  • Build and optimize monitoring, alerting, and performance metrics systems to support both development and production environments.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to streamline CI/CD pipelines and improve deployment efficiency.
Experience & Education
  • BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent on-the-job experience.
  • 5+ years of post-degree professional experience maintaining large scale distributed systems.
Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of cloud deployment and infrastructure management using Azure, AWS or GCP.
  • Experience with on-premise hardware services, including virtualization and containerization management solutions such as Proxmox VE, Docker and Podman.
  • Solid knowledge of CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI/CD or GitHub Actions.
  • Ability to optimize and tune on-premise hardware for performance and low latency using tools such as perf, systemd-analyze, iostat, and tuning profiles.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing metrics, monitoring, and alerting pipelines using Datadog, Grafana, or other observability tools.
  • Skilled in architecting infrastructure workflows with tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Helm, or Kubernetes.
Nice to Haves
  • Building and scaling a developer operations team, including workflow automation, access management, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Having managed and optimized databases either in the cloud or on-site.
  • Familiarity and experience implementing security best practices.
  • Having set up or configured networks, both physical and virtual.
  • Interfacing with and controlling cameras, motors, lasers, and other third party devices.
Atom Computing provides a wide variety of perks and benefits, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for our employees and their dependents. Additionally, we offer unlimited paid time off, 401K company matching, short- and long-term disability, FSA, dependent care benefits, and life insurance.  We also offer drinks, snacks, and catered team lunches in our offices, every day!

The salary range for this position is between $140,000 - $175,000, commensurate with experience. In addition to salary, we offer an annual bonus and equity in the company.
