Job description


This position leads in the major project plans, develops budgets and directs both long-and short-term scheduled maintenance outage plans and construction plans. They share the responsibility for the safe, cost effective and timely execution of those outage plans and implementation of major projects with plant management. Projects are often schedule critical for successful completion of plan outages and/or construction projects. Project values are often more than $10M.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following: utility company or similar, lead project manager responsible for executing contracts and project management for overhauls of major steam turbine, generators, boiler feed pump and turbines, turbine valves and associated turbine related equipment, or experience as an OEM turbine technical field advisor, field engineer, or project manager working for the company that provides the turbine overhaul services.
Responsibilities
Develops and leads in ideas for and execution of major project plans, provides direction, and coordinates project activities associated with multiple outage tasks and capital investments to meet targeted time frames and budgets that have high impact on plant performance. Coordinates construction projects at various power plant locations. Strong use of interpersonal skills to coordinate the work of many different work groups, vendors, and contractors. Utilizes influencing skills to challenge and gain acceptance to altering current practices, as necessary. Ensures the safety of all employees involved with the work. Negotiates and administers both long-and short-term contracts for services and projects at the generating stations. Mentors and trains less experienced project managers. Performs additional advanced responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering or related technical field (Typically, 8 years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.).
Ten years of plant experience, including four years in a senior technical/leadership role or as a construction and outage project manager.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the following: utility company or similar, lead project manager responsible for executing contracts and project management for overhauls of major steam turbine, generators, boiler feed pump and turbines, turbine valves and associated turbine related equipment, or experience as an OEM turbine technical field advisor, field engineer, or project manager working for the company that provides the turbine overhaul services.
Effective verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of outage project plans.
Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities. Advanced leadership recognition through effective analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
Advanced project management skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
The ability to work effectively with people of different backgrounds.
The ability to travel to other plants during outages.
Success factors for this role:
Has advanced leadership capabilities to manage multiple projects and wisely uses time and resources to complete assigned projects within the time frame and budget allowed. The impact of a unit outage ranges from $50,000 to $300,000 per day.
Is recognized as a subject matter expert and has advanced project management experience and has technical skills related to one or more project types that are critical to the successful completion of assigned construction or outage related projects often above $10M in value.
Is responsible to help train and mentor less experienced project managers to develop them in project management methods, including budgeting, cost and schedule control to develop their project management and project execution skills.
Stays current on industry trends in outage management, project management and equipment testing and assessment techniques.
Works with the plant management to ensure high unit availability and reliability of their generating assets to ensure reliable revenue flow for the company.
Demonstration of advanced technical knowledge and understanding of outage projects and the company's business processes. Emphasis on identification and fulfillment of customer requirements.
Participates and leads on teams that results in contribution to achievement of team goals and objectives, sometimes in a lead role for a phase of a project.
Directs and leads in project management responsibilities as necessary often with little oversite to determined time frames and with a high degree of accuracy. Provides accurate input into the budget process and contributes to meeting the actual targets.
Establishes and maintains effective work relationships within the department and the company. Maintains the professional competence, knowledge, and skills to effectively complete responsibilities; enhances job knowledge and abilities by taking personal responsibility for professional development and training.
Maintains sensitive and confidential information regarding company information.
Attends work on a regular basis and support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.
Ensures all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understands and complies with all policies, codes, and regulations applicable to position and company.
