Job Description
Position Summary:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for supporting the accounting and financial reporting activities related to the company's downstream operations. This position performs complex accounting analyses, prepares journal entries, reconciles balance sheet accounts, supports the month-end close process, and ensures compliance with U.S. GAAP and company policies. The Senior Accountant serves as a key business partner to operations, commercial, supply, and finance teams, helping ensure accurate accounting for inventory, transportation, product movements, and other downstream activities while driving process improvements and operational excellence.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules related to downstream operations.
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Perform detailed analysis of financial results and investigate variances between actual and expected performance.
  • Maintain balance sheet integrity through timely reconciliation and resolution of outstanding items.
  • Support accounting for inventory, transportation, logistics, terminal operations, product movements, and related downstream activities.
  • Partner with operations, commercial, supply, treasury, tax, and FP&A teams to resolve accounting issues and improve financial processes.
  • Assist with preparation of financial reports, management reporting packages, and other analyses as required.
  • Ensure compliance with U.S. GAAP, company accounting policies, and internal control requirements.
  • Support internal and external audit requests by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement, automation, and increased efficiency within the accounting function.
  • Participate in system implementations, acquisitions, integrations, and special projects as assigned.
  • Assist in documenting and maintaining accounting procedures and controls.

Qualifications
Education, Certificates, and Licenses:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.

Experience:
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and month-end close activities.
  • Experience in downstream energy, refining, marketing, transportation, terminaling, distribution, manufacturing, or other operational accounting environments preferred.
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, JDE, or similar platforms.
  • Experience supporting audits and internal control compliance activities preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and general accounting principles.
  • Knowledge of downstream accounting activities, including inventory, product movements, transportation, storage, and operational accruals preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail. Ability to analyze large data sets and identify trends, discrepancies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Effective organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
