What does a senior electronics engineer do?

A Senior Electronics Engineer designs, develops, and tests electronic systems and components, often leading teams on complex projects. They are responsible for ensuring that products meet technical specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations. Senior Electronics Engineers also troubleshoot issues, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with other departments such as manufacturing and quality assurance. Their work is critical in industries like telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior electronics engineer?

To excel as a Senior Electronics Engineer, you need advanced knowledge of circuit design, embedded systems, and signal processing, typically backed by a degree in electrical or electronics engineering and several years of industry experience. Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., Altium Designer), simulation software (e.g., SPICE), and relevant certifications such as a Professional Engineer (PE) license are often required. Strong problem-solving, project management, and collaboration skills help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing reliable electronic systems, leading teams, and ensuring the successful delivery of complex projects.

What are some common challenges senior electronics engineers face when leading cross-functional project teams?

Senior Electronics Engineers often coordinate with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to deliver complex products. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication across disciplines, as each team may have different priorities and technical languages. Managing project timelines while addressing unforeseen technical issues and integrating feedback from various stakeholders requires strong leadership and adaptability. Successfully navigating these challenges helps build trust and delivers high-quality solutions.

What is the difference between Senior Electronics Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectSenior Electronics EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electronics or Electrical Engineering; often with 5+ years experienceBachelor's or Master's in Electronics or Electrical Engineering; typically 2-5 years experience
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, testing, and troubleshooting electronic systems in R&D or manufacturingFocus on designing and developing electronic circuits and components, often in product development
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing sectorsCommon in consumer electronics, telecommunications, and industrial equipment sectors

While both roles involve electronic circuit design and testing, Senior Electronics Engineers typically oversee projects, mentor teams, and handle complex systems, whereas Electronics Design Engineers focus more on creating and developing electronic designs for products. The senior role requires more experience and often involves leadership responsibilities.

How much does a senior electronics engineer earn?

A senior electronics engineer typically earns between $90,000 and $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often have specialized skills in circuit design, testing, and troubleshooting, and may hold certifications such as IEEE or PMP.

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Electronics Engineer to support the continued development, enhancement and deployment of a complex rail inspection system used to detect surface defects in railway rails using eddy current technology.
The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, analysis, testing and ongoing support of a sophisticated electronic measurement system used to identify rolling contact fatigue (RCF) defects, including head checking, squats and other rail surface anomalies. The role combines electronics engineering, signal processing, software development and data analysis.
This is a varied and technically challenging position requiring strong analytical skills, practical engineering capability and a willingness to engage directly with systems in the field. The role will involve both office/laboratory-based development and hands-on support activities, including commissioning, troubleshooting and fault investigation on customer sites in the UK and internationally.
Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. We do not offer sponsorship
Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in the ongoing development and technical support of advanced eddy current rail inspection systems for the detection of rail surface defects.
  • Develop and refine approaches to improve defect detection capability, reliability and system performance.
  • Analyse large and complex datasets to evaluate system behavior, validate performance and investigate anomalies.
  • Develop and maintain software tools and applications, primarily in C#, for system control, data acquisition, analysis and reporting.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of software developed in LabVIEW (desirable).
  • Design, analyse, test and fault-find analogue and digital electronic circuits used within sensing, acquisition and processing systems.
  • Support the commissioning, calibration and integration of systems in operational railway environments.
  • Conduct fault investigation and root cause analysis for system issues identified during testing or operational deployment.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering teams, customers and external stakeholders to deliver robust technical solutions.
  • Produce technical documentation, reports and engineering records to support product development and operational deployment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives relating to system reliability, maintainability and performance.

Person Specification
Essential Skills and Experience
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Electronic Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Signal Processing, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Strong mathematical foundation with the ability to apply analytical techniques to complex engineering problems.
  • Significant experience in the design, analysis, testing and fault diagnosis of electronic circuits.
  • Demonstrable experience in signal processing and measurement systems, ideally involving sensor-based systems or non-destructive testing.
  • Proficiency in C# software development.
  • Strong data analysis skills with experience handling large datasets and extracting meaningful engineering insight.
  • Practical problem-solving ability and a systematic approach to fault finding.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally for system commissioning, technical investigations and customer support.
