What is a senior drafter?

Senior Drafters are experienced professionals who create detailed technical drawings and plans used in construction, manufacturing, and engineering projects. They work closely with architects, engineers, and project managers to transform concepts and specifications into precise blueprints and layouts. Senior Drafters typically use computer-aided design (CAD) software, ensure drawings comply with industry standards, and may supervise or mentor junior drafters. Their expertise is essential for ensuring that projects are accurately visualized and executed according to design requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior drafter?

To thrive as a Senior Drafter, you need advanced proficiency in technical drawing, a strong understanding of engineering or architectural principles, and typically an associate degree or certification in drafting. The Senior Drafter also provides department-wide technical leadership, mentors experienced drafting and BIM professionals, performs advanced quality-assurance reviews, and helps develop the standards and processes that support consistent, high-quality work across the department.

As an employee-owned company, Kovach gives employees the opportunity to contribute to the company’s success while sharing in the value they help create.

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of project scope, façade systems, specifications, schedules, budgets, fabrication requirements, installation conditions, and technical risks.
  • Oversee the development of shop drawings, fabrication drawings, BIM models, takeoffs, bills of material, material orders, releases, and related project deliverables.
  • Monitor drafting schedules and labor usage and recommend actions to address budget, resource, schedule, scope, or quality risks.

  • Serve as the department’s senior technical resource for façade systems, detailing, system interfaces, fabrication, installation, and constructability.
  • Mentor BIM Drafters, Drafter II employees, Drafter III employees, and other drafting personnel through technical guidance and project reviews.
  • Perform advanced quality-assurance reviews for accuracy, constructability, fabrication readiness, installation feasibility, and compliance with Kovach standards.
  • Ensure errors, omissions, conflicts, redlines, and review comments are resolved after project deliverables are released.
  • Review outsourced drafting work and address recurring technical, quality, communication, and workflow concerns.
  • Develop and refine drafting standards, procedures, checklists, templates, details, and technical resources.
  • Identify and support improvements involving CAD methods, BIM workflows, automation, software utilization, and document control.
  • Participate in project coordination and constructability meetings and communicate technical risks and recommended solutions.
  • Support employee onboarding, technical training, project recovery efforts, and department process improvement.

What You’ll Bring

  • Extensive experience leading complex drafting projects from kickoff through fabrication.
  • Expert-level technical drafting knowledge and proficiency.
  • Comprehensive understanding of architectural enclosure and façade systems, detailing, fabrication, installation, system interfaces, and constructability.
  • Ability to maintain detailed knowledge of project scope, systems, schedules, budgets, risks, and deliverables.

  • Ability to resolve advanced technical issues involving façade systems, adjacent conditions, fabrication, and installation.
  • Experience providing advanced technical guidance to experienced drafting and BIM professionals.
  • Ability to develop practical drafting standards, procedures, review processes, and technical resources.
  • Strong understanding of project schedules, drafting labor estimates, budgets, and resource requirements.
  • Ability to analyze project performance and recommend improvements without compromising quality.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
  • Ability to influence technical outcomes and provide leadership without formal supervisory authority.
  • Strong ownership, judgment, accountability, and follow-through.

Technical Knowledge

  • Expert-level AutoCAD or comparable drafting software
  • Complex shop and fabrication drawing development
  • Architectural enclosure systems and façade detailing
