As a Drafter Intern, you'll commonly assist on a variety of projects ranging from architectural layouts to mechanical parts or electrical schematics, depending on the firm's focus. You'll frequently use industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks to create and modify technical drawings. Interns often work closely with experienced drafters, engineers, and project managers, gaining hands-on experience with real-world design challenges and learning best practices for documentation and collaboration. This environment provides a valuable opportunity to develop both technical and teamwork skills, which are essential for a successful drafting career.

How to become a drafter with no experience?

To become a drafter with no experience, you can start by learning drafting software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks through online courses or community college classes. Gaining basic knowledge of engineering or architectural principles and creating a portfolio of practice drawings can help demonstrate your skills to employers. Will CAD drafters be replaced by AI?

CAD drafters perform detailed technical drawings that require precision and understanding of design intent, which AI currently cannot fully replicate. While AI tools can assist with automating repetitive tasks and improving efficiency, human oversight and expertise remain essential in the drafting process, especially for complex projects. Drafters who develop skills in CAD software and adapt to new technologies will continue to be valuable in the industry.
