Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Butte, MT

Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead mechanical design and engineering activities for advanced product development initiatives. This role will take ownership of assigned projects from concept through completion while supporting the development of prototype, pre-commercial, and new commercial products for demanding industrial manufacturing applications.

The ideal candidate will bring extensive mechanical design experience, strong SolidWorks capabilities, and hands-on expertise with ANSYS and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This position requires a combination of technical leadership, product development, engineering analysis, and design-for-manufacturing experience.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Product Development

  • Lead assigned engineering projects from initial concept through completion
  • Design mechanical systems, components, and assemblies for prototype and commercial products
  • Develop project requirements to address product and manufacturing process challenges
  • Create detailed mechanical designs, models, drawings, and engineering specifications
  • Support prototype, pre-commercial, and new commercial product development
  • Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to improve product quality, manufacturability, and performance

Engineering Analysis

  • Perform Finite Element Analysis to evaluate mechanical designs and product performance
  • Utilize ANSYS for engineering simulation and design validation
  • Conduct technical investigations related to product and process performance
  • Prepare engineering calculations, analyses, specifications, and technical recommendations
  • Identify technical issues and develop practical engineering solutions

Project & Technical Leadership

  • Take technical ownership of assigned projects and drive engineering deliverables
  • Present engineering analyses, recommendations, and proposed solutions to management
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and product development teams throughout the design process
  • Support continuous improvement of products, processes, and engineering practices
  • Ensure designs meet applicable performance, quality, and manufacturing requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master's degree preferred
  • 6+ years of mechanical design engineering experience
  • Strong experience with SolidWorks or a comparable 3D CAD platform
  • ANSYS experience required
  • Strong Finite Element Analysis (FEA) expertise
  • Experience developing mechanical products, components, or equipment
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering and machine design principles
  • Experience preparing engineering specifications, analyses, and technical documentation
  • Ability to independently manage engineering projects from inception through completion
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical communication skills
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen due to the nature of the work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Experience designing products for manufacturing
  • Advanced product development experience
  • Experience developing prototype and pre-commercial products
