Job description

Senior Staff Accountant

Work Setting: Hybrid - Raleigh, NC

Hazen and Sawyer is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Accountant to support accounting, billing, financial reporting, and statutory filing activities for our international subsidiaries in the UK and Canada. This role is well suited for an accounting professional who is comfortable managing multi-currency activity, supporting international project teams, maintaining accurate financial records, and working independently in a deadline-driven environment.

This position will work closely with International Project Managers and the Senior Principal Accountant to support client billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll-related accounting, tax filings, intercompany activity, and month-end reporting for our UK and Canadian operations.

About Hazen and Sawyer

Hazen and Sawyer is an employee-owned environmental engineering firm with a singular focus on water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure. Founded in 1951 by the son of Allen Hazen, developer of the Hazen-Williams equation, we support the planning, design, and construction oversight of critical environmental infrastructure projects across the United States and internationally.

We value accountability, collaboration, technical accuracy, and practical problem-solving. Our teams operate with minimal bureaucracy and a high level of trust, allowing professionals to take ownership of their work while having access to experienced leaders for guidance and support.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records across multi-currency ledgers for UK and Canadian entities, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and proper documentation of transactions.
  • Work closely with International Project Managers to prepare, review, and finalize monthly client invoices in accordance with contract terms and internal deadlines.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Principal Accountant to prioritize accounting activities, manage deliverables, resolve discrepancies, and ensure timely completion of required tasks.
  • Process accounts receivable and accounts payable activity, including cash receipts, customer payment application, vendor invoices, subcontractor payments, coding, reconciliation, and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain proactive communication with the Senior Principal Accountant regarding cash receipts, subcontractor payments, intercompany activity, reporting issues, and items impacting financial operations.
  • Review and approve monthly employee expense reports for UK and Canada, ensuring compliance with company policies, proper documentation, and accurate coding.
  • Maintain and update subcontractor payment schedules based on customer receipts, ensuring subcontractor payments align with cash collections and contract requirements.
  • Maintain fixed asset records and prepare related depreciation and amortization entries.
  • Support required tax, payroll, and statutory filing activities for UK and Canadian operations, ensuring filings are prepared accurately and submitted within applicable deadlines.
  • Support monthly and quarterly management reporting, account reconciliations, and year-end close activities.
  • Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconciliations for UK and Canadian entities.
  • Monitor exchange rates and prepare foreign currency adjustments to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Stay current with changes in UK and Canadian accounting, tax, payroll, and filing requirements that may impact assigned responsibilities.
  • Utilize accounting systems such as Xero, QuickBooks, Deltek Vision, or Deltek Vantagepoint to support multi-country accounting operations.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting.
  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience maintaining accurate financial records, preparing reconciliations, and supporting month-end or year-end close activities.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Windows-based applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High attention to detail and a strong sense of ownership over work product.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to manage competing deadlines independently.
  • Ability to work well both independently and collaboratively with accounting staff, project managers, and leadership.
  • Professional demeanor and sound judgment when handling financial information, deadlines, and internal communications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Deltek Vision or Deltek Vantagepoint.
  • Experience with multi-currency accounting or international subsidiary accounting.
  • Prior experience supporting accounting functions within an engineering, consulting, or professional services environment.
  • Familiarity with UK VAT requirements, including standard, reduced, zero-rated, and exempt VAT treatment.
  • Familiarity with UK payroll accounting, including PAYE, NIC, and auto-enrolment pension contributions.
  • Understanding of Canadian GST, HST, and PST requirements, including regional differences and provincial tax rules.
  • Familiarity with Canadian payroll-related accounting requirements, including CPP, EI, T4, and summary filings.
  • Experience tracking eligible expenses for Canadian Scientific Research and Experimental Development credits.
  • Experience using accounting systems such as Xero, QuickBooks, Deltek Vision, or Deltek Vantagepoint in a multi-entity or multi-country environment.
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation based on experience, skills, education, and geographic location.
  • Comprehensive health benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and prescription coverage.
  • Pre-tax flexible spending plans for medical, dependent care, and transportation.
  • Short- and long-term disability coverage and employer-paid life insurance.
  • Paid holidays, floating holidays, and paid time off.
  • Employer-contributed 401(k) plan and additional financial planning support.
  • Professional growth opportunities, including tuition reimbursement, in-house training, and incentives for professional registration and professional organization memberships.
