Job description

Position Summary

The Data Solutions Tech Lead is a senior technical role responsible for defining, architecting, and delivering modern data platforms aligned with Mortenson's strategic data vision. This position combines technical guidance with direct solution development, requiring active participation in design, engineering, implementation, and optimization of enterprise data solutions. The individual serves as both a technical lead and a practitioner, driving delivery through personal contribution while establishing standards, patterns, and best practices across the data ecosystem.

The role is centered on deep expertise in Microsoft Fabric, with a strong emphasis on Medallion Architecture (Bronze, Silver, Gold) and Data Mesh principles to enable scalable, domain-oriented data products. The Tech Lead is expected to design, develop, and optimize pipelines, models, and data solutions while establishing technical direction and engineering standards across the platform.

Operating at a Lead level, this position provides technical direction while remaining closely engaged in execution. The Tech Lead partners with engineers across initiatives, contributes directly to solution development, resolves complex technical challenges, and ensures the successful delivery of scalable, secure, and high-quality data products.

This role is intended for a technical leader who derives value from building solutions, solving complex engineering challenges, and driving delivery through direct contribution. While the position provides technical leadership and mentorship, it does not serve as a traditional people-management role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering, development, and delivery of enterprise data solutions utilizing Microsoft Fabric.
  • Engineer scalable and reusable data pipelines, data products, semantic models, and platform capabilities that support business objectives.
  • Design and implement solutions aligned with Medallion Architecture and Data Mesh principles to ensure scalability, maintainability, and domain ownership.
  • Establish and promote engineering standards, development practices, and implementation patterns across the Data Solutions organization.
  • Serve as the lead technical advisor for capabilities, evaluating technologies and providing recommendations to the Data Solutions Manager regarding platform strategy and technical direction.
  • Engineer proof-of-concepts and prototype solutions to evaluate emerging technologies, capabilities, and business opportunities.
  • Partner with business and technology stakeholders to translate requirements into engineered solutions that deliver measurable business value.
  • Drive technical execution across initiatives by resolving complex engineering challenges and ensuring successful solution delivery.
  • Champion engineering excellence through automation, performance optimization, code quality, testing, and operational reliability.
  • Ensure solutions are secure, scalable, supportable, and aligned with enterprise standards and operational requirements.

Data Engineering & Integration

  • Engineer, develop, and optimize data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory, Azure Data Factory, Fivetran, APIs, and related technologies.
  • Build and maintain reusable ELT/ETL frameworks, engineering accelerators, and integration patterns.
  • Develop and optimize data solutions supporting enterprise reporting, analytics, AI, and operational workloads.
  •  Engineer integrations across SQL Server, Oracle, SaaS applications, APIs, and other enterprise platforms.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex data, platform, performance, and integration issues.
  • Implement monitoring, observability, and data quality controls to ensure platform reliability and trustworthiness.
  • Continuously improve performance, scalability, maintainability, and cost efficiency of data solutions.

Platform Engineering & Delivery

  • Contribute directly to sprint commitments through engineering, development, testing, deployment, and support activities.

  • Lead technical implementation efforts for strategic Data Solutions initiatives.

  • Participate in backlog refinement, solution estimation, technical reviews, and release planning activities.

  • Review and contribute code to ensure adherence to engineering standards and best practices.

  • Support production environments through root cause analysis, incident resolution, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Drive automation and operational efficiency across development, deployment, monitoring, and support processes.

Mentorship & Governance:

  • Mentor engineers through technical coaching, code reviews, pair programming, and collaborative solution development.
  • Lead by example through direct engineering contribution and delivery ownership.
  • Promote engineering best practices, reusable patterns, and modern development methodologies.
  • Assist in onboarding and developing engineers through knowledge sharing and technical guidance.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, innovation, and engineering excellence.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years in data engineering or architecture.
