Senior Amazon Data Engineer information

What does a senior Amazon data engineer do?

A Senior Amazon Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining large-scale data processing systems on Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure. They work with big data technologies, such as Amazon Redshift, AWS Glue, and Amazon S3, to ensure data is efficiently collected, stored, and made accessible for analytics and business intelligence. Additionally, they often lead data engineering teams, optimize data pipelines for performance, and ensure data quality and security standards are met.

What are some common challenges faced by senior Amazon data engineers when working with large-scale datasets?

Senior Amazon Data Engineers often encounter challenges related to optimizing the performance of data pipelines and ensuring data quality at scale. Managing and transforming massive volumes of data requires expertise in distributed systems, efficient data modeling, and automating data validation processes. Additionally, collaborating with cross-functional teams—such as data scientists, analysts, and software engineers—means balancing differing requirements and priorities while maintaining robust, scalable solutions. Staying current with evolving AWS services and best practices is also essential to address these challenges effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior Amazon data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Amazon Data Engineer, you need advanced proficiency in data modeling, ETL development, SQL, and experience with large-scale data architectures, typically supported by a computer science degree or equivalent. Expertise in AWS services (such as Redshift, S3, Glue), programming languages like Python or Java, and relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Data Analytics) are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and leadership skills distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure the efficient design, implementation, and optimization of complex data solutions that drive business insights and support organizational goals.

  • Build robust ingestion pipelines that support both batch and near real-time data processing into Microsoft Fabric.
  • Land, transform, cleanse, and model enterprise data within OneLake, Lakehouse, and Warehouse environments.
  • Optimize data pipelines for reliability, scalability, performance, and cost efficiency, monitoring and troubleshooting pipeline performance while proactively identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI semantic models, dashboards, and enterprise reporting solutions, including optimized DAX measures and data models that support self-service analytics.
  • Establish reporting standards, visualization best practices, and reusable reporting assets.
  • Partner with business stakeholders to understand reporting needs, translate business questions into actionable analytics, and continuously improve reporting capabilities that support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Develop and maintain Microsoft Fabric components including Data Factory, Lakehouse, Warehouse, Dataflows, and Pipelines, working closely with the Data Architect to expand the ecosystem and ensure solutions follow Microsoft Fabric best practices and architectural standards.
  • Support enterprise data governance initiatives, including metadata management, security, lineage, and access controls, and assist with implementation of Microsoft Purview and other governance tools as needed.
  • Collaborate with IT, manufacturing, operations, engineering, and business teams, participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies, support data integration projects across manufacturing and ERP platforms, and document technical solutions, data models, and pipeline architecture.

What We Are Looking For in a Sr. Data Engineer, Microsoft Fabric & Power BI:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent experience).
  • Five (5) or more years of experience designing and supporting enterprise data solutions.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Fabric, including Data Factory, OneLake, Lakehouse, Warehouse, and related platform components.
  • Advanced experience developing Power BI semantic models, dashboards, reports, and DAX calculations.
  • Strong SQL skills and experience designing relational and dimensional data models.
  • Experience building ETL/ELT data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric Data Factory, Azure Data Factory, Synapse, or similar technologies.
  • Experience integrating data from operational technology (OT) systems including historians, SCADA systems, PLCs, OPC UA, or similar industrial data sources.
  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum software development methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of modern cloud-based data engineering principles, data architecture, data governance, and business intelligence best practices.
  • Ability to design scalable, maintainable, and secure enterprise data solutions.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail and data quality.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams and communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities, working independently while collaborating across cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint.
